1 Independent navigation through an open door with the door opening toward the patient. (A) As the door is being pulled open, the wheelchair is angled and ready to pivot. (B) The patient turns and begins to move the wheelchair through the doorway. (C) The patient pulls on the door frame with one hand and pushes the door farther open with the other. (D) The patient then quickly propels the wheelchair through the doorway. If the door closes before the patient is all the way through, the patient allows the door to bump against the wheelchair (moving the hand out of the way) and then applies an additional push to the door.
