2 2012-13 Calendar Planning Considerations
Student attendance: Schedule 180 required / funded student attendances. Balance student attendances across two semesters. Align attendance with key testing dates: AHSGE: September 23-24, 2012 PSAT: October 17, 2012 Explore, 8th Grade: October 17-18, 2012 Plan, 10th Grade: October 17-24, 2012 AHSGE: December 3-7, 2012 AHSGE: March 18-22, 2013 ARMT: April 8-19, 2013 AP Testing: May 6 to 17, 2013 (Estimated) Reduce “short week” scheduling associated with high levels of absenteeism that undermines student achievement. Deconflict Board of Education election dates from break periods. Schedule breaks so as to reduce the use of “adverse weather days.” Key holidays that bear upon student attendance: Labor Day: Monday, September 3, 2012 Columbus Day: Monday, October 8, 2012 Halloween: Wednesday, October 31, 2012 Veterans’ Day: Monday, November 12, 2012 Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 22, 2012 Christmas: Tuesday, December 25, 2012 New Year’s Day: Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Martin Luther King Day Monday, January 21, 2013 President’s Day Monday, February 18, 2013 (No Student Attendance) Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 Memorial Day Monday, May 27, 2013 Other holidays: Independence Day Wednesday, July 4, 2013 Subject to the foregoing considerations, attempt to align student attendance days with attendance days in the Madison County Schools calendar. Schedule seven additional teacher workdays to facilitate preparation for school opening activities, data analysis, and planning focused upon raising student achievement.

3 Student and Staff Absences During Shortened Weeks Are Substantially Higher than Full Weeks
