1 SI or System International
THE METRIC SYSTEM SI or System International

2 WHY DO WE USE THE METRIC SYSTEM?
All other countries are using the metric system (except Liberia, Myanmar and U.S) Scientists need a universal way to communicate data (SI Units)

3 SI Base Units Quantity measured Unit Symbol Length meter m
Mass kilogram kg Volume liter L Temperature Celsius C Time second s

4 APPROXIMATE CONVERSIONS BETWEEN METRIC & US LENGTH UNITS
A kilometer is about 10 soccer fields A meter is about the same length as a yard A centimeter is about the width of pinky A millimeter is about the width of pencil tip A foot contains about 30 centimeters

5 WHAT DOES THE METRIC SYSTEM MEASURE?
The gram measures mass (amount of matter in an object) The liter measures volume (how much space an objects takes up) The meter measures the length of an object or the distance from place to place

6 WHAT TOOL IS USED TO MEASURE...
MASS- BALANCE VOLUME- GRADUATED CYLINDER (LIQUIDS OR IRREGULARLY SHAPED OBJECTS) - RULER (SOME SOLIDS) DISTANCE- METRIC RULER OR METER STICK

7 THE METRIC CONVERSION CHART (STAIRCASE METHOD)
To convert to a smaller unit, move decimal point to the right Kilo 1000 units Hecto 100 units Deka 10 units Base Unit Deci 0.1 units Centi 0.01 units Milli 0.001 units To convert to a larger unit, move decimal point to the left

8 TRY THIS USING THE STAIRCASE METHOD
1000 mg = ______ g Step 1: Determine if you are going to go up or down the ladder. Step 2: Determine how many steps there are from milligrams to grams. Step 3: Move the decimal point the amount of places that was determined in steps 1 & 2.

9 TRY THIS USING THE STAIRCASE METHOD
1000 mg = ______ g 1 Step 1: Determine if you are going to go up or down the ladder. Step 2: Determine how many steps there are from milligrams to grams. Step 3: Move the decimal point the amount of places that was determined in steps 1 & 2.

10 TRY THIS USING THE STAIRCASE METHOD
.15 L = __________ ml

11 TRY THIS USING THE STAIRCASE METHOD
