We belong together By: Mariah Carey Analysed by: Matthew Frers

2 Examples of poetic devices
“Oh, what I wouldn’t give to have you lying by my side,” (Imagery) I could definitely imagine myself lying next to Mariah Carey while she begs me to stay with her.

3 Examples of poetic devices
“Who’s gonna talk to me on the phone till’ the sun comes up,” (figurative language) I feel that this line means that Mariah wants someone who is always by her side, since we commonly see in movies that people who love each-other will phone each-other or make an effort to talk to each-other during the night time so they have someone by their side.

4 Examples of poetic devices
“Bobby Womack’s on the radio saying to me ‘if you think you’re lonely now’,” (allusion) Mariah has her radio on which is playing Bobby Womack’s song “If you think you’re lonely now” which is a love song talking about how Bobby is leaving his lover. This causes Mariah to overthink about how she split with her lover.

5 Examples of poetic devices
“I’m feeling all out of my element, I’m throwing things, crying trying to figure out where the hell I went wrong, the pain reflected in this song ain’t even half of what I’m feeling inside, I need you need you back in my life, baby,” (mood) You can tell that in this part of the song, Mariah is getting very emotional. It almost seems like she is sad and mad at the same time, because she states that she’s crying, but at the same time she’s also throwing things. Generally, when someone is crying, they are sad, and when someone is throwing things, they are angry.

6 Examples of poetic devices
“When you left I lost a part of me,” (figurative language) Mariah obviously didn’t lose a part of her physical body when her lover left her, however what this could mean is that her significant other was so important to her that they were like a part of her.”

7 Questions Did you like the song?
The song is extremely catchy; I still remember the beat from when I used to listen to this song when I was a little kid. When I was younger, all I was able to appreciate was the beat of the song and Mariah Carey’s beautiful voice, however I now have made my own interpretation on what I believe the song means, and it makes the experience of listening to it so much more immersive. I guess the reasons I like the song are because, it’s an immersive song that I can somewhat relate to in my own ways, and it’s also extremely catchy. One particular part that I can relate to is the line “who’s gonna talk to me on the phone till’ the sun comes up,” because when I was younger and very foolish I used to talk to a person I liked over the phone late at night. None the less the song gives me a very comforting feeling, knowing more than 1 person knows how I once felt.

8 Questions What is the meaning to the line “I was lying to myself,”?
I think the meaning to this line is that when Mariah broke up with her significant other, she was thinking that she didn’t need him and he wasn’t important to her in attempt to make the breakup less emotional so that she could feel good that the breakup happened. What she later finds out is that all that she told herself was lies and that she really did love her ex and she now wants them back.

9 Questions Can you relate to the line “when you left I lost a part of me,”? I can because when I was younger, I used to get very attached and nearly addicted to certain toys that I had like Hot Wheels or Webkinz, and when I grew a bit older and my parents started to give some of my toys away, I started to feel like I was losing a piece of myself because of how attached I used to be to those toys and how much they meant to me when I was younger.

10 Questions - How does the song make you feel?
The song, although I’ve interpreted the lyrics to mean something sad, makes me feel somewhat comforted knowing that I’ve been through a situation much like Mariah’s in this song. I also feel comforted because the song brings me back to the road trips my family used to take to Whistler or even Banff.

11 Questions Whose perspective is the song being written from?
I think that it’s being written from Mariah’s first person perspective, when she was going through a rough time.

12 Meaning Paragraph – What is the meaning to the song?
For me, I believe that the song is about Mariah going through a breakup as she references the line “we belong together,” as if she had split up with a loved one. Evidently Mariah becomes sad talking about how she was listening to the radio late at night when she heard something that set her off making her start “crying” and “throwing things”. I feel this is supposed to be a sad song, and that It is about a sad topic, even the instrumental is a bit sad but I also find it to be quite up beat and groovy. Mariah broke up with her ex and thought that she was all fine, until she realized that her ex was an extremely important part of her life and she would give a lot just to have her ex “lying by (her) side”. The song is definitely something I can relate to.
