1 Healthy place, healthy people December 2016

2 The challenge…

3 Well North: places change for the better when we see local people as the solution, not the problem…
10 health & wellbeing path-finders across the north of England, part funded by PHE supporting people to be part of vibrant, connected communities, rather than just quitting smoking or eating better help transform neighbourhoods into dynamic communities by realising the potential of the people who live there. tackling debt, lack of jobs and training, missed education opportunities, poor housing, and loneliness.

4 …and Well Bradford is unique because the project is hosted by an acute hospital (BTHFT)….
BTHFT is a major employer (5,500) And an economic hub for the city (new £30m cap-ex; goods & services; utilities, training professionals and apprentices) Yet ….. for the majority of the community it’s simply a provider of acute care Well Bradford wants to test how hospitals make a greater difference beyond the acute services they offer Is this a way to close the “health & wellbeing” gap ?

5 …so we have begun working with partners to develop a range of projects ….
Local match-funding from the CCGs, Council, and acute trust. But these are not “hand-outs” – we must not create dependency Well Bradford is hosted by the acute trust, but will collaborate with all sectors to deliver sustainable improvements to our diverse communities These projects will contribute to overcoming the causes of ill health, highlighted by studies like Born in Bradford Starting in Girlington (next door to the hospital) we aim to make a difference to health outcomes. From 2017 we will begin to support projects in Holme Wood & Keighley

6 …. and we are asking local people what would make the biggest difference.
Investing in sustainable projects, clear health benefit, community support Girlington “ideas day” in July generated action plan; agreed at 2 day event in November with Well North & community leaders: 6 workstreams… Supporting young families: eg “HENRY” healthy eating, first aid, early adoption of proven ideas from “Better Start Bradford”; Getting the right treatment: eg appropriate use of A&E; signposting services Healthy environment: eg tree screening for air pollution, action on parking problems, reclaiming open spaces, clean up Girlington, fast food outlets Involving everyone: eg engaging faith communities, supporting joint initiatives within the community, building a sense of common purpose (Re-)connecting the hospital and BD8: eg outreach, education, inspiration and aspiration; careers development and practical support Girlington health campus: eg asset plan; greater than sum of parts

7 It’s early days, but momentum is building…
further discussions about future of allotments, parks & under-utilised land, park & ride potential widening community engagement in different work streams Girlington Growers (bulb planting, green space) local community leaders visited Bromley by Bow “all educators” becoming involved (access to playing fields, careers aspiration, science in the classroom etc) hugely successful walk-in testing & self-care event, organised & led by community & GPs residents’ action group met Police, Council, School & Hospital re: concerns about on-street parking
