1 Isn’t It Ironic? Irony: Definition, Types, Examples

2 Why use the literary device irony?
It is often used to add suspense and interest. It is also used to keep the reader thinking about the moral of the story.

3 What is irony? Irony is about expectations. Irony is the
OPPOSITE OF WHAT IS EXPECTED. There are 3 kinds of irony. Verbal Dramatic Situational

4 The Big Picture Irony Verbal Situational Dramatic

5 Verbal Irony Verbal irony is the simplest kind of irony. It is used when a character says one thing, but really means the opposite. Also called sarcasm. Examples The locker room smells really good. Awesome! Another homework packet!

6 Verbal Irony Another Example:
When you clearly appear to be sick and someone asks you if you’re okay. You may sarcastically say, “Of course!” But in reality you have been vomiting and feel like fainting.

7 Dramatic Irony Occurs when the audience knows something that the characters in the story, on the screen, or on the stage do not know. This is used to engage the audience and keep them actively involved in the storyline.

8 DRAMATIC IRONY EXAMPLES:
Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but we know he cheated. Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.

9 Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected.

10 SITUATIONAL IRONY EXAMPLES:
General Sedgwick’s last words were, “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.” Bill Gates uses an Apple computer. The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out. The mayor’s wife gets caught stealing. The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking. The barber always needs a hair cut himself.

11 Review Irony is a kind of a surprise. It is the difference between what is expected to happen, and what actually does happen. Irony is like a glitch, a twist, or a last minute switch in the game. It is an interruption of events that causes an unexpected outcome.

12 Something that is ironic is unexpected.
If unexpected by a character, it’s dramatic. If unexpected by everyone, it’s situational. If it’s sarcasm, it’s verbal.
