Diabetic cases lack HRV-HR. HRV-HR is the consistent inverse relationship between HR and HRV in normal physiology, which manifests as a negative linear regression slope in analysis of covariance. Diabetic controls, nondiabetic controls, and nondiabetic cases all have negative regression slopes. However, diabetic cases have a regression slope not significantly different from zero (P = .26) and the slope is significantly different from that of the other subgroups (P = .02). HR = heart rate; HRV = heart rate variability; SDNN = standard deviation of all R-R intervals.
