2 Figure 1 Diabetic cases lack HRV-HR. HRV-HR is the consistent inverse relationship between HR and HRV in normal physiology, which manifests as a negative linear regression slope in analysis of covariance. Diabetic controls, nondiabetic controls, and nondiabetic cases all have negative regression slopes. However, diabetic cases have a regression slope not significantly different from zero (P = .26) and the slope is significantly different from that of the other subgroups (P = .02). HR = heart rate; HRV = heart rate variability; SDNN = standard deviation of all R-R intervals. Heart Rhythm  , DOI: ( /j.hrthm ) Copyright © 2017 Heart Rhythm Society Terms and Conditions

3 Figure 2 HRV-HR in the different groups of patients. Beat-to-beat variability comparison between (A) diabetic cases and (B) diabetic controls, nondiabetic controls, and nondiabetic cases. Note the presence of HRV-HR in all other subgroups as visualized by increasing variability at lower HR. This is not seen in diabetic cases. HR = heart rate; HRV = heart rate variability.
