1 Listening and attention prompts
This is a useful prompt to ensure that Listening and attention is covered and taught effectively towards the month age band.

2 Listening and attention
Plan in regular and short listening activities daily e.g. singing familiar songs, register, goodbye song. This will support the child's listening abilities and allow adults to model correct ways of listening. Ensure that phonics phase one is taught weekly. This is a critical stage for all learners and will expose them to everyday sounds, blends and noises. Plan in listening games, activities around phonics and allow children to explore these games during independent play e.g. listening bags. Enable phonics activities to cater for all learners. Set out clear achievable instructions. Be clear and precise with the children and make sure tasks are broken down clearly. Ensure the setting is clearly organised and labelled which will support children with their attention skills. Listening and attention • Listens to others one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests them. • Listens to stories with increasing attention and recall. • Joins in with repeated refrains and anticipates key events and phrases in rhymes and stories. • Focusing attention – still listen or do, but can shift own attention. • Is able to follow directions (if not intently focused on own choice of activity). Provide exciting resources and activities in the setting to create optimum engagement. Extend learners by setting challenges e.g. can you make a car out of the Lego? This will built up their attention span and encourage focus.
