1 Aliens and Us Autumn Term 1 Year 1 Maths Topic
Throughout the term our maths work will include reading, writing and ordering numbers, addition and subtraction – especially mental strategies, recognising and using money, 2D shapes, time and measuring length. A focus this term will be reading, writing and ordering numbers and recalling addition pairs for numbers up to 10. Topic Next week we will start our creative topic which is ‘Aliens and Us’. This is inspired by the Clare Freedman and Ben Cort book ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. This is mostly an art and design technology based topic and the children will also have the opportunity to use their imagination when playing in their ‘alien spaceship’. As part of this topic the children will be designing pants for the aliens, and we would like to invite you to come and help your child make their pants on the morning of Friday 29th September. Aliens and Us Autumn Term 1 Year 1 History We will be learning about the lives of two astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Major Tim Peake, and making comparisons between them. PE Both classes have PE on Mondays. If your child has their ears pierced, please remove their earring on their PE day. During the cold weather the children will require tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt for outdoor PE. Please make sure all PE kit is labelled with your child’s name. Science We will be focusing on materials. This includes looking at a range of materials, using scientific vocabulary to describe them, and investigating their properties. English In English we will continue our ‘alien’ theme by writing stories about aliens. We will also be writing instructions to help plan and create an alien tea party.

2 Year 1 Curriculum Newsletter – Autumn Term 2017.
1 / 2 Year 1 Curriculum Newsletter – Autumn Term 2017. RE This half term we will be learning about special places which will include places of worship for Christians and Jews. As part of this we will hopefully be visiting St. Michael’s and All Angels Church in the last week of the half term. Reading Throughout the year your children will continue to take home a book bag; it is important that they practise their reading homework. This may consist of a reading book or sets of words to practice blending and segmenting. Those children with reading books will have the opportunity to change them at least twice a week. Spelling As you are aware, we now teach our phonics through the Read, Write, Inc. programme. The children have been put into groups based on their phonic skills. Each week they will be given some spellings to learn, taken from their work in these groups. Spellings will be given out on an Monday and tested the following Monday. Please support your child by helping them practise their words during the week. . Maths Homework As homework this term, we will work towards learning our number skills and facts. These include keys skills such as reading and writing numbers, as numerals and words. Key number facts, such as recalling number pairs to 10, will help children to calculate quickly and accurately. We will be learning and using these at school as well, so it is important your child has regular practice. As the children improve their knowledge, they will move up on our Maths target boards! Maths homework will begin in a few weeks, once the children have settled into the routines of spelling homework. Many thanks, the Year 1 team.
