1 CHEM 4511: Physical Chemistry 1
Fall 2017 Instructor: Prof. J. M. Weber

2 Technicalities(1) Requirements: CHEM 3311 or 3351
MATH 2400 or APPM 2350 PHYS 1110 or 2020 (all minimum grade C-). Requires prerequisite or corequisite course of PHYS 1120. Class Hours: MWF 10:00 am to 10:50 am Office Hours: Mon: 4 pm – 5 pm Wed, Thu: 3 pm – 4 pm

4 Technicalities(3) Problem Sets (Homework):
usually handed out (i.e. posted on course web site) on Fridays, to be returned the following Fridays before class homework will be graded by graduate student Franklin Maharaj credits accumulated over the semester determine your homework performance grade. Everyone may drop one homework assignment without penalty. Class cancellations: Currently, there are no plans for cancelled class meetings. However, since the 2-hr exams will be held outside of class hours, some class hours may be cancelled. Stay tuned.

5 Technicalities(4) Additional Lectures (voluntary): There may be some voluntary additional lectures to cover some material in more depth, review some math and physics, or do some computer experiments to enhance learning. In that case, time and place will be announced. Final Grades: Homework performance: 40% Clicker questions (participation) 5% Average of the two-hour-exams: 30% Final exam: 25%

6 Technicalities(5) Textbooks: Required: Atktins & de Paula “Physical Chemistry” Please note that reading material will be part of homework and relevant for exams. Optional: James R. Barrante “Applied Mathematics for Physical Chemistry”

7 Homework Assignments This Week
Clicker Questions and PowerPoint Slides will be posted on the course web site! Homework Assignments This Week Read Atkins & de Paula, “Foundations” Chapter (particularly A and B) before class on Friday, September 1. Read Atkins & de Paula, Chapter 1 A and B before class on Friday, September 1. Problem Set 1 will be posted later today, due before class on Friday, September 1.
