2. Remember to highlight the COMMAND WORDS
On paper both paper 1 (A342) and paper 2 (A343) you will get a range of different length questions. Some 4 marks (both papers), a 6 mark and an 8 mark question (Paper 2).
Often the best way to get a good mark is to break the question down into steps that you will need in your answer. This involves making sure that you read the question carefully as it often gives you prompts on what to consider.

Candidate response:
Businesses support community projects to gain positive attention from the public. This demonstrates good intentions and they are likely to gain respected profile. This leads to more customers and more income for the business. Businesses may sponsor a local event and they could allow their staff to have time off work to volunteer at this event.

6. Compare the above answers. Which one answers the question better?
Answer A: A company that is socially responsible looks after its local community as well as its employees. HMG is a good example as they offer job placements to year olds. This won’t cost them any money but will give them company a good name in the community and encourage people to come and work for them. The average worker stays with the company for a lifetime. This is because HMG is socially responsible and looks after its employees well and treats them as part of a team. Having staff that stay for a lifetime saves on recruitment costs as it says in document 2. This shows that there are advantages to the business as well as the employees. I think that by being socially responsible you can make more money because everyone sees this as being important nowadays and will want to do business with socially responsible companies.
Answer B:
It is important for a company to be socially responsible not just try to make money. HMG donates paint to the local community and provides the Rose Wood gardens for local residents. The employees of HMG mainly live in the local community so by providing these services for the local community you are helping out your own employees at the same time. If a business was just trying to make money they wouldn’t do these things but then their employees might not be happy and want to keep working for them.
I think that companies should bother with social responsibility so that they have a good name in the local community.

9. The whole–life prison sentence may infringe the right to be able to have a family and the right to privacy. People who have committed crimes can be punished by community service such as cleaning streets instead of being in prison. Some people may also be fined. Curfews are given and if it is against a particular person a restraining order. Society may feel supported by whole life sentences as they are reassured that there isn’t danger on the street. People will know they will never be harmed by that person. A victim may feel scared to re-visit the scene of the crime if they thought the person might have been released from prison.
Some people feel that a whole-life sentence maybe too steep if they genuinely show remorse and improved behaviour in prison. A prisoner made a speech about how it is wrong to lose the right to vote and that that isn’t fair. However, I believe that it is fair and it is another form of punishment. I feel that the human rights of the whole community are more important than just one prisoner. Some may state that people have to rely on crime to survive but there are many organisations such as ‘the arc’ to help people such as with homelessness. Also there is no need to murder which I think is the only crime which should have life sentences.
