Welcome to Class 3 Mr Steels Together Everyone Achieves More!

2 Format of the school day
Children will continue to enter school in their classes for registration 9-9:30 Guided Reading, key skills activities and targeted intervention AM- Literacy and Numeracy will be taught in the morning on most days PM- Foundation subjects will be taught in the afternoon through our topic in most cases which is The Shang Dynasty for the first term.

3 Structure of the morning
9am – 9.30am. Early morning session to include guided reading, handwriting, spellings, punctuation and grammar and maths key skills activities. 9.30am – 10.30am Literacy 10.30am am Collective Worship 10.45am – 11am Playtime 11am – 12 noon Maths

4 Structure of the afternoon
Varies depending on each day but will include: PE (Tuesday AM with Swimming for Y4 and Friday PM) Science. Art/DT. History/Geography. ICT. PSHCE RE. Music. – Mrs Isaacs – music specialist Interventions where necessary Work will be undertaken in mixed classes, differentiated accordingly for age and ability and is based around a different topic each half term.

5 National Curriculum New in 2014
Much more rigorous with higher expectations, especially in Maths with push for Greater Depth Emphasis on core skills e.g. grammar and punctuation in English Strong emphasis on reading for pleasure More challenging ICT curriculum Emphasis on debate and discussion Application of skills across the curriculum

6 Homework Maths and English - Sent out Fridays – return by following Friday morning ICT available in school if necessary Spellings – Friday for test the following Friday Children are expected to read at least 4 times a week- Regular Reader Reward We would like to emphasise the importance of the children being increasingly more responsible for their homework in KS2

7 E-Safety Please ensure that children complete any online homework (or any other activities online) in a room or area where they can be supervised Please talk to you children regularly about keeping their personal information private when they are online. This has been discussed in class. Monitor the games that your child are playing and the sorts of websites that they are accessing Be very cautious of letting your child use online games that allow them to play against others (e.g. X Box Live) Some games to watch our for: Grand Theft Auto (GTA), Call of Duty

Strong emphasis on reading across school. Expectations from KS1 to KS2 are higher- reading for meaning and discussing texts in detail with confidence. Reading for pleasure will significantly impact upon your child’s confidence in reading and their achievement in reading overall (and across the wider curriculum) Children will bring a reading book home daily (Use of School Library once a week). 9 Target setting Your child will have targets set for maths, writing, reading and attitude to learning each half term. These will be agreed with your child following discussion at the start of each half term. These will be shared with parents, who will have opportunity to comment on and offer support at home. Children and teachers will assess progress each half term and once again share details with parents.
