1 Carolus Linnaeus He devised a system of grouping organisms into hierarchical categories based on physical characteristics, such as form or structure. The purpose is to categorize organisms so they can be identified and studied.

2 His classification system that was adopted by the scientific community in Like many modern filing systems, it begins by grouping living organisms into a few large aggregations first (the Kingdom level), and then subdividing the groups into ever-smaller units at each step or Taxonomic Level. The smallest level is the species level. World countries provinces counties..

3 The major classification levels, from largest group to smallest (several of these have subdivisions)
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species binomial nomenclature comes from these two

4 Classification Activity
In groups arrange the following organisms into categories and sub-categories based on physical characteristics, behavior, or some other criteria. Each group will have to explain their classification system. Whale, bat, owl, alligator, beaver, Bluefin tuna, Yellowfin tuna, parrot, crocodile, mouse, Tiger shark, tiger, E. coli (bacteria), Salmonella (bacteria), Reef shark, Red oak (tree), English oak (tree), Red maple (tree)

5 Binomial Nomenclature
This is the scientific way to identify a particular organism The genus name is written first (always Capitalized). The species name is written second (never capitalized). Both words are either italicized or underlined. Eg.. Homo sapiens or Homo sapiens
