1 What is Irony? It’s funny! It’s unexpected. It creates suspense.
It’s like Cupid never falling in love.

2 Irony is a kind of a surprise
Irony is a kind of a surprise. It is the difference between what is expected to happen, and what actually does happen. Irony is like a glitch, a twist, or a last minute switch in the game. It is an interruption of events that cause an unexpected outcome.

3 Verbal irony is when an author says one thing and means something else.
Dramatic irony is when an audience perceives something that a character in the literature does not know. Situational irony is a difference between what is expected and what happens Three Types of Irony

4 VERBAL IRONY The simplest kind of irony. You use it everyday when you say one thing and really mean another. It is often similar to a sarcastic response. Examples: When you appear to be sick and someone asks you if you’re okay. You say “Of course!” But in the meantime you are vomiting and fainting. Your boyfriend shows up in ripped up jeans and a stained t-shirt. With a smirk, you say, "Oh! I see you dressed up for our date. We must be going to a posh restaurant."

5 Verbal Irony Saying one thing but meaning another Tone of Sarcasm
Examples: As your teacher is signing detention forms for students who did not complete their homework, she says in an irritated voice, “I just love when students don’t do their homework!” It’s raining cats and dogs outside. You took the day off from work today to finally put up a fence post because of your annoying neighbors. You express, “This weather is just lovely.” Your friend spoils the ending of a movie for you, and you express in a haughty tone, “Thanks a lot!” Verbal Irony

6 Verbal Irony Continued
Green Memory A wonderful time- the War: when money rolled in and blood rolled out. But blood was far away from here--- Money was near Do you think that the speaker really considered this a “wonderful time”? Why or why not? What kind of people might be willing to sacrifice blood for money? Verbal Irony Continued

7 More Fun with Verbal Irony
You have a six-foot tall friend who you call “shorty.” You planned six months in advance for good weather on your wedding day. It is suddenly raining and hailing. You step outside and say, “Oh good! I was hoping it would rain.” More Fun with Verbal Irony

8 DRAMATIC IRONY Occurs when the audience knows something that the characters in the story, on the screen, or on the stage do not know. It’s like the audience is more aware of what’s going on than the people in the production. This is used to engage the audience and keep them actively involved in the storyline.

9 Dramatic Irony continued…
In all of the Friday the 13th movies, we know Jason is in the woods. The characters do not. When they go out into the woods we are afraid for them because we know that they are in danger. We scream for them to run, we get excited when they fall, we cringe when we know that Jason is right behind the tree. When watching a talk show, the audience knows why a person has been brought on the show. However, the person sitting in a chair does not know that he is going to be reunited with a former lover. This adds to the suspense and humor of the show. Dramatic Irony continued…

10 The reader knows something about a character’s situation that a character does not know.
The reader is aware of the irony. The character is unaware of the irony. Dramatic Irony

11 Dramatic Irony Continued
Example: In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, we know that Brutus is plotting to kill Julius Caesar, but Julius Caesar does not know this. He thinks that Brutus is a loyal man to him. In Cinderella, the prince goes searching for the “princess” who lost her slipper at the ball. The prince does not know that she is a poor girl, almost a slave to her stepsisters and stepmother. It is ironic because we know the owner of the shoe is Cinderella, a poor girl, but he thinks it is a girl that comes from great wealth. Dramatic Irony Continued

12 SITUATIONAL IRONY Occurs when a situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would be. Examples: The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking. The barber always needs a hair cut himself. You break a date with your girl friend so you can go to the ball game with the guys. When you go to the concession stand, you run into your date who is with another guy. You stay up all night studying for a test. When you go to class, you discover the test is not until the next day.

13 What actually happens is not expected to happen
The character and the reader are unaware of the irony Situational Irony

14 Situational Irony Continued
An aviator was sent on a mission to a distant part of a globe. When he returned to his base, he noticed it was strangely quiet. Everything was in perfect order, but there wasn’t a sign of life in that place. He wandered through the town in growing astonishment. Human beings and animals simply had vanished from the scene. He tore back to the airport, filled his plane with high octane gas, and flew terrified, to New York, London, Moscow, Shanghai. While he had been on his mission, every living creature had apparently disappeared. He was the only man alive in the world! He weighed the situation carefully and found it intolerable. Suicide seemed the only solution. He swallowed a vial of deadly poison and calmly waited for it to take effect. Just as the drug reached his brain, and the room started swimming before his eyes, he heard a familiar sound. It was the telephone ringing. -Bennett Cerf Situational Irony Continued

22 Applying Irony to “Twilight”
Bella wants to know how Edward tracked her to Port Angeles. He says, “Your scent.” She doesn’t know what to make of that, but the readers knows that he’s telling the truth. ________ Irony: Bella – “How long have you been 17?” Edward – “A while.” Bella learns Edward is a vampire. Instead of being frightened she is intrigued. Applying Irony to “Twilight”
