*Your child will have access to the i-Ready math program at home. This allows them to work on skills that meet them at their appropriate level. It is recommended that students spend at least 45 minutes per week on the online math practice.

* is the best way to contact me. If there is a change in transportation during the school day, please call the office as soon as possible and they will notify me. Otherwise, send a note in your child’s folder if there is a change in your child’s transportation. *Please check your child’s folder daily. 8 All Volunteers, returning or new will be required to complete a “background check form” with references. This will be an annual requirement for those wishing to volunteer.

10 *If your child is out sick he/she must return to school with an absence note. You can also submit the note from the Woodland Heights website. The Student Absence Excuse Form in under Quick Links. This is super convenient!!!! *Remember that your child must be free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours before they are allowed to return to school.

*We will have snack each day. (Time to be determined.) Please remember to pack a healthy snack for your child. Please be aware I DO NOT keep extra snacks in the classroom due to the potential for ants etc. *On Early Release days, if your child is going home right after school then I would recommend you send a larger snack that day because we don’t have our normal snack time but rather the school has lunch in the classroom at 10:15.

12 12:05-12:30 *Second grade designated Wednesday’s as the day for students to purchase ice cream. *Please be aware that I can’t legally tell your child they can not buy ‘extras’ (chips, carbonated juice drinks, cookies, ice cream, etc...) If you only wish for them to buy these kinds of things one day a week or not at all, then please send me a note in writing.

13 The children will go outside to play from12:35-1:00, weather permitting. Time is subject to change. Please send your child to school appropriately dressed for the weather.

14 *NC Reading Assessments- mClass 3D (TRC & DORF) are given three times a year (September, January, & May) *School district Benchmark assessments at the end of each quarter for ELA and Math. (Math Benchmark assessment does not align with our Ready math curriculum therefore, the scores will not be considered into their end of quarter grade for math.)

15 ELA Curriculum Lucy Calkins Writing & Reading Workshop model will be used this year at WHE. Thanks to our generous PTO, teachers were trained this summer on this. Expect a lot less papers coming home with your child. This model helps students to really think and analyze what they read by making notes and conferencing with peers and their teacher. Our ELA (English-Language Arts) Standards are also assessed using a program called mClass. This is a statewide initiative. Your child has been assessed on Nonsense Word Fluency, Dibels Oral Reading Fluency, and Text Reading Comprehension.

English Language Arts Dibels Oral Reading Fluency DORF assessment Students are required to read as much as they can of 3 separate passages in one minute each. They need to read at least 52 words with 90% accuracy to meet this benchmark. They are asked to retell as much as they can at the end of each passage.

17 TRC (Text Reading Comprehension)
Using leveled text, students are individually assessed on their accuracy and oral and written comprehension. Our school district mandates that 2nd graders pass a Level J or K text at the beginning of the year, Level L by the middle of the year, and Level M or N by the end of the year. Books are leveled based on a Guided Reading level (GRL). *See examples of leveled books.

18 Math *Woodland Heights is in its second year of the Ready Math program. It is a program that aligns with the North Carolina standards and allows teachers to meet the needs of all student ability levels. *Students will be taking a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint where each child stands in regards to math standards. From that data, students are able to go online and work on math lessons that meet their individual needs. These online activities can be accessed from home. The log in info will be coming home in the next day or so. *There is also a free App, Door 24 plus, that allows students to work on fact fluency.

19 Letterland is our second grade spelling program
Letterland is our second grade spelling program. The spelling principle is located at the bottom of each lesson/unit. Most weeks we will focus on List A and Tricky Words. Five diagnostic words will be added to the weekly test. After the 1st quarter has ended some students will have an accelerated list. Second grade’s focus is on the 7 types of syllables.
