SEEDS TRAINING MONARCH ELEMENTARY September 15, 2016 Hope Weaver, SEEDS Chair

2 SEEDS (Supporting Early Elementary Developmental Skills)
Interactive reading program which promotes: - Critical thinking skills - Productive thinking skills - Research skills Facilitated by volunteers who: - Spend 30 minutes in the classroom - Read a story aloud to students - Lead an instructional activity or discussion Designed to instill the love of reading!

3 How to do SEEDS… 1. Plan ahead: - Coordinate with teacher
- Select a book - Practice reading the book - Plan a book-related activity (craft/game) or discussion Read the story aloud to students 3. Lead the class in the activity or discussion 4. Entire visit should take about 30 minutes (confirm allotted time with teacher)

4 SEEDS is NOT: Only craft/game time Refreshment time
Just for creative volunteers It IS a fun, easy way to get involved in your child’s class and education….and the students love it!

5 Where do I get my ideas? How do I choose a book? Start with teacher:
What is the class currently studying? Does the date coincide with a holiday? How do I choose a book? Media center Teacher’s library Book store Library Home

6 How do I figure out an activity?
Some schools have SEEDS libraries with books and activities. Although Monarch does not have a SEEDS library, we have a lot of flexibility and choices. Internet Craft websites Educational blogs Pinterest Your imagination

7 Example Third Grade: - Class was studying colonial times
Teacher provided the book If You Lived in Colonial Times After reading the book, volunteer and students discussed similarities and differences of children’s days/activities then and now Students then created a Marbles game with string and clay

8 SEEDS Summary Instills the love of reading; improves critical thinking, productive thinking, and research skills. Discuss curriculum with teacher Select a book related to curriculum Practice reading the book Plan a reinforcing activity or discussion Go to class and HAVE FUN! Complete the process in 30 minutes
