3 Overview & Highlights | An Innovation Agenda rooted in entrepreneurship
“Entrepreneurs are key to the delivery, sustainability and long-term legacy of Canada’s Innovation Agenda.” - Victoria Lennox, CEO and co-founder of Startup Canada. On May 4-6, 2016 at Startup Canada Day on the Hill, over 1,100 entrepreneurs, innovators, Startup Canada Community Leaders, anchor companies and government decision makers from across Canada convened in Ottawa to apply an entrepreneurial lens to policy and provide direct input into Canada’s Innovation Agenda. Recommendations for an Innovation Agenda that best supports startup and small business entrepreneurs to grow the economy, create jobs and scale as large, globally-oriented companies in Canada came from attendees as they participated in private meetings, policy hack-a-thons, policy hearings, on-stage panels and growth talks. Overview: Day 1 | Advocacy Day | Startup Canada Community Leaders participated in meetings with Standing Committees, Members of Parliament, anchor Companies, the Startup Canada Board and Founder of WIND Mobile Tony Lacavera. Startup Canada Day on the Hill officially kicked-off with a Launch Party at iPolitics. Day 2 | Conference Day | Through on-stage panels, keynotes, policy hearings, hack-a-thons & growth talks, entrepreneurs had their say in the Innovation Agenda as government listened. Day 3 | Entrepreneur Caucus & Community Day | Top entrepreneurs met to make concrete recommendations on how Canada’s Innovation Agenda should manifest across government, and Startup Canada Communities met to lay the foundations for the future of the network. 5 Startup Canada Communities on the Hill
Advocating for entrepreneur constituents across Canada Startup Canada Communities on the Hill On May 4, 25 Startup Canada Community Leaders from 9 provinces and 1 territory arrived in Ottawa to represent local entrepreneurs in meetings with Members of Parliament, Ministerial Policy Hearings, and some of Canada’s top anchor companies. On May 5th, they connected with 1,100 entrepreneurs, policy makers, Members of Parliament, and investors to forge partnerships and opportunities for entrepreneurs in their community. IMPACT Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged and thanked Startup Canada Community Leaders for the work they do to stimulate and support entrepreneurship in their communities. MPs John Brassard and Alexander Nuttall championed Startup Barrie in the House of Commons (Click above links for videos). Startup Revelstoke initiated a working relationship with MP Wayne Stetski on a project to improve support for SMEs. Cross party interest has arisen in the findings & recommendations from Startup Canada Day on the Hill. Startup Canada has been invited to present to the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology in June. 6 Laying the groundwork on a vision for Canada
At the Startup Canada HQ across from Parliament Hill (56 Sparks Street, Ottawa), community builders from across the country met to share their vision for innovation in Canada, receive government relations training, and set clear and concrete objectives for their Member of Parliament meetings, policy hearings, corporate partners meetings, and other advocacy activities. Startup Canada Community leaders met with four of Startup Canada’s key corporate partners - Intuit QuickBooks, UPS Canada, Microsoft Canada, and PayPal in intimate settings to discuss how these anchor companies can better engage and support the Startup Canada Communities. Startup Canada Community Leaders and partners met with Members of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology to discuss the role of entrepreneurs and Startup Communities in building Canada into an innovation nation and to establish commitments to collaborate. The luncheon was held at Ottawa’s Rideau Club. 11 Celebrating the vision at iPolitics
#StartupDay officially kicked-off with over 100 VIPs with a launch party at iPolitics, an independent, non-partisan, entrepreneur-run up- to-the-minute service that has become a leader in Canadian political news. 2016 marked the third year the #StartupDay Launch Party was hosted by iPolitics, a publication with a passion for connecting entrepreneurs and business leaders with government. The launch party celebrated achievements made to date to advance entrepreneurship in Canada and set the tone for the next day’s policy hearings and conversations with Members of Parliament. iPolitics also used the opportunity to discuss a recently launched initiative called the Green Chamber Guide, a database of information on current MPs. © Startup Canada All Rights Reserved.

13 Giving every entrepreneur a voice
1,100 Canadian entrepreneurs, innovators, anchor companies, Members of Parliament and public servants convened to voice their recommendations and support for an Innovation Agenda with entrepreneurs at its centre by participating in policy hack-a-thons, hearings, panels, growth talks and more. With support from over 30 mentors, attendees also received advice and mentorship to grow their business. For the first-time ever Demo Day on the Hill, powered by UPS Canada, took place this year at Day on the Hill. Demo Day on the Hill is a pitch competition provides export-oriented companies in Canada with support and access to global opportunities. On May 5, six finalists from across Canada pitched to an audience of over 100 attendees and a diverse group of 6 judges including top entrepreneurs, investors, media, and industry. The finalists had an action-packed day filled with pitch training by Dr. Sean Wise, mentorship from entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts including Manitobah Mukluks, Victory Square Labs, among others. Each company showcased their products at the Startup Marketplace during the Startup Soiree Reception. On May 5, Startup Canada Community Leaders continued their private meetings with Members of Parliament and Ministers including Minister Chagger and the Hon. Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition. Startup Communities & Anchor Companies Meet & Greet with Minister Bardish Chagger In this meet & greet, Startup Canada Community Leaders and Startup Canada industry partners demonstrated their work within Canada's entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in conversation with the Hon. Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism. Outcome: Since this meeting, Startup Canada Communities have responded to a call from the Minister for top startup tourism destinations across Canada, and Startup Canada continues to be the voice of entrepreneurs to government having had numerous follow-up meetings to present recommendations from Startup Canada Day on the Hill since. The Hon. Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition Startup Canada met with the Hon. Rona Ambrose to discuss the role of entrepreneurs and Startup Communities in building an innovative, entrepreneurial Canada. 36 Outcomes & Next Steps

37 The Entrepreneurs’ Innovation Agenda, a report written by Startup Canada will be presented to the following Ministers and more: Minister Bains, Minister Chagger, Minister Morneau, Minister Duclos, Minister Mihychuk, and Minister Foote. Immediately following the event, Startup Canada met with Minister of Public Services & Procurement Staff, who invited our vision for small business procurement. Startup Canada has booked meetings with Minister of Status of Women and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development to present the findings of the hack-a-thons. Startup Canada has invited MPs Jeneroux, McCauley and McGuinty to our offices for a meeting and tour. Startup Canada has booked follow-up meetings with the Hon. Rona Ambrose and Minister Qualtrough, the Parliamentary Secretary for Environment and the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. Startup Canada met with and will continue to meet with policy directors for Minister Chagger and Minister Bains to share recommendations for the Innovation Agenda. Startup Canada to appear as a witness before the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology in June. Startup Revelstoke is working with MP Wayne Stetski on a project to improve support for SMEs. Startup Canada will engage Minister’s offices and committees to continue this work through the Canadian Entrepreneurship Institute (a Startup Canada Program).
