1 Thoracic surgery in Norway 2015 Norwegian Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery
Norwegian register for general thoracic surgery. Steinar Solberg, MD, PhD. Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Rikshospitalet, Norway

2 Summary, 2015 The number of general thoracic operations is quite stable – some 1500 procedures annually. All eight hospital have reported their operations for 2015. The number of operations performed by minimally invasive (thoracocopic) technique – VATS is increasing. In 2015, 626 operations for lung cancer were performed. This is ”all time high” both as absolute number and relatively. Twenty one per cent of those diagnosed with lung cancer were operated. The reporting to the Cancer Registry of Norway provides valuable information also regarding lung cancer surgery. Very low mortality, both 30 and 90 days after surgery for lung cancer! The mortality has been substantially reduced since the 1990ties. If the operations in 2015 were done with the mortality rate in 1991, some 70 patients more would have been dead after 90 days.
