3 Reading All readers will be heard twice per week. Once during guided reading sessions and once on a one to one basis; more if needed. Guided reading focuses on the comprehension of texts, rather than just ‘reading the words’. Home readers will changed as much as possible. We expect parents/adults to read with the child at least three times a week. This will be monitored on a weekly basis (usually Friday). Now that most children are able to read fluently, it is very important that you ask them questions, about what they are reading, to ensure that they understand.

4 English and Maths Homework
Maths homework will be given on a Friday. This must be returned by the following Friday. Spellings will be handed out on a Tuesday, with the spelling test taking place on the following Tuesday. English homework will also be handed out on a Tuesday, with the spellings and should be handed in by the following Tuesday as well. We will inform children if they have online homework, if you are unable to access online, then there will be an opportunity for your child to complete in school. As you are aware, there has been a whole school emphasis on times tables. We do encourage times table practise at home. Children will be tested throughout the week on their times table knowledge. As the National Curriculum states, that by the end of Year Four, all children should know every times table up to the 12 times table.

5 P.E. P.E. in J3 will take place on a Monday (outdoor) and a Thursday (indoor). J4 will take place Monday (outdoor) and Wednesday (indoor P.E. Kits must remain in school and be taken home every half term holiday to be washed. For the outdoor P.E. session, children can bring tracksuits and trainers, depending on the weather. Tracksuits and trainers should be taken home each week. We start P.E. on the first week of each half term, so please ensure that your children bring their kit in, on their first day back.

6 General Matters If you wish to speak to the class teacher, please try not to approach them in the morning, as they have thirty children to attend to. Instead, inform the office of any messages, or ask the office staff to make an appointment with the class teacher. Teachers will be also be available on the playground, at the end of each school day. We would ask that you stand back towards the back of the infant playground, to allow the parents of the younger children to wait closer to their classroom. The bell rings at 8.55am, so all children should be in class by 9 o’clock. If not, then they will receive a late mark. This can have a significant impact on their learning. Attendance is very important and you should send your child into school whenever possible. High attendance for the class can lead to class rewards. We ask that all children have one water bottle in school. Please buy one with a sports cap. All inhalers/medication need to be clearly labelled with the child’s name. Only prescribed medication can be given. A medical form must be completed. (Available in the school office).

7 How you can help? Ensure completion of all homework.
Read as much as possible, including all types of reading material. Practise times tables. Encourage independent research. Constant practice of current and previous times tables, as this will benefit their mathematical knowledge. Regular practice of the weekly spellings. Practise using time, e.g. reading digital and analogue clocks and durations of journeys, programmes etc. Try to use Microsoft Office, including Powerpoint, as this will help their general ICT skills and benefit their summer project.

8 Religious Education Our Mission Statement describes us as a ‘family, loving and learning together in the presence of God’. This works best when links between home, school and parish are strong. During Year 4, your children will have the opportunity to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist (First Communion). Both of these Sacraments have changed, to become more parish and family-based. The Church will be responsible for the main preparation programme.

9 Thank you! This powerpoint will be available, along with any other school information, from our school website. Please revisit the website often for school and class updates.
