1 KS1 Assessment Guidance for Parents
End of KS1 Assessment KS1 Assessment Guidance for Parents SPRING 2017

2 KS1 Assessment – A Summary
Key Stage 1 is year 1 and year 2 At the end of year the children’s attainment is assessed and submitted nationally. This has already been tracked and assessed informally by the teachers throughout year 1 and 2 to build a picture of the whole child. At the end of year 1 the children undertook the Phonics Screening Test as a measure of their attainment in Phonics. At the end of year 2 the teacher will assess whether your child has achieved one of the three following standards in Reading, Writing and Maths. Working towards the expected standard Working at the expected standard Working at greater depth within the expected standard

3 SATS SATS= Standard Attainment Tests These will be taken during May.
We do not dwell on these with the children and we do not use the word ‘test’ and would ask you not to either. The tests form one part of the assessment for your child and they are not the whole assessment There is not a SATS paper this year for Writing, there is an optional SPAG test.

4 Paper 1 – combined reading prompt and answer booklet
WHAT WILL BE ASSESSED BY TESTS? TESTS for YEAR 2 in 2017 Reading Writing Maths There is no writing assessment. There is an optional SPAG test which we are choosing not to partake in as a school (most schools are not ) Paper 1 – combined reading prompt and answer booklet Paper 2 – more challenging separate reading booklet and reading answer booklet Paper 1 - Arithmetic Paper 2- Reasoning

5 Reading Papers Multiple choice
Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show in which order they happened in the story’ Matching, e.g. ‘Match the character to the job that they do in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that shows what the weather was like in the story’ Short answer, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended answer, e.g. ‘Why did Lucy write the letter to her grandmother? Give two reasons’

6 SAMPLE READING TEST QUESTIONS
Reading Test 1 has combined text, questions and answers. Children will be asked to tick correct answers, they will be expected to find and retrieve facts and sometimes explain their answers.

7 Reading Test 2 will have a more challenging separate reading booklet and reading answer booklet.

8 Maths Papers Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 25 marks and taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking 35 minutes, with a break if necessary. There are a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method).

9 SAMPLE MATHS TEST QUESTIONS - ARITHMETIC

10 SAMPLE MATHS TEST QUESTIONS - REASONING
Some questions are read by the teacher. Look at the picture of Sam and Ben in question 5. Sam’s arm is fifty centimetres long. Ben’s arm is forty centimetres long. How much longer is Sam’s arm than Ben’s arm? Write your answer in the box.

11 WHAT WILL BE TEACHER ASSESSED?
TEACHER ASSESSMENT MATHS READING WRITING Teacher assessment using Interim Framework Teacher assessment using Interim Framework Teacher assessment using Interim Framework In Year 2 the SATS help to inform part of the picture, they are not the whole picture. In Year 6 the assessment is based solely on the test. In year 2 it is based on teacher judgement. SCIENCE

12 INTERIM FRAMEWORKS The teacher will assess a child using the ‘interim assessment framework’. The evidence from the child’s books, the SATS and other observations will build a picture of whether they are working towards, at, or in greater depth for that subject. The interim frameworks are a series of bullet points. We need to have evidence for every bullet point in order to say that a child is ‘working at the expected standard.’

25 What is the ‘Expected Standard’ in writing?
The DfE have issued some guidance for schools. Children are expected to be able to write using a range of different genres.

26 Working at greater depth

27 SCIENCE 2016 For Science pupils will be grouped into 2 categories.
Working at the expected standard, or a category for those pupils who do not meet the standard. Interim Teacher Assessment Framework at end of KS1 – STA 2017

28 REPORTING RESULTS Teacher assessments will be passed on to Year 3 so the results can be used in planning for KS2 teaching. Written reports are given at the end of the summer term along with your child’s results. The results of the tests are submitted nationally which will then be summarised and compared to other schools.

29 HELPING AT HOME Try not to put pressure on your child.
Support with home learning and any specific areas for improvement that have been discussed at Parents Evening. Read regularly and discuss a variety of texts – not just ‘listening’ to your child read. Short bursts of mental maths, times tables and problem solving etc.

30 LOTS OF PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT!
WE RECOMMEND:- Early nights and lots of sleep Good attendance Good punctuality A good breakfast LOTS OF PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT!
