1 Unit 15 Lesson 4 Learning

2 Lesson 4 Unit 15 Understanding
. One of the most important things in learning is understanding. In learning, we should understand something, then accept it and then learn it by heart. Different people have different ways to help them understand things. Maybe philosophy will be helpful to you in finding better ways of understanding. Unit 15

3 Work in groups. Talk about the following strategies which help you to understand things.
Being relaxed and happy Having time to think about what you are learning Being interested in the topic Discussing topics with friends Memorizing things Having a clear visual explanation Your own way

4 Take notes while discussing by filling the information card.
Name Things to learn Strategies Effect

5 Questions to be discussed:
1. Is there usually something you should understand in learning? 2. How do you usually understand things? 3. What is most difficult problem with with understanding? 4. In which subject do you have more problems in understanding? 5. How do others help you?

6 Philosophy is helpful in understanding
Philosophy is helpful in understanding. Read the extracts from a philosopher, first to see how he makes people understand something. Read the first part and find answer for the questions: 1. What did Sophie receive? 2. What was it about?

7 Go on reading, and make sure the following:
Topic to explain Strategy to explain Example given Characters in the magic trick What is philosophy? Give an example. A magic trick. A magician and a white rabbit.

8 Continue your work. In the magic trick In reality ( the universe) Fact
True or false Consciousness Wonder The magic game is only a trick. People live in it. False True The rabbit doesn't’t realize it is in the trick. They are aware of being part of something mysterious. How does he do it? How does it work?

9 Further discussion of the white rabbit
What metaphor does the magician use for the following ? The white rabbit People Philosopher Microscopic insects existing in the rabbit’s hair Someone who tries to climb up the hair to look into the magician’s eyes The universe

10 What does another letter talk about which Sophie received few days later? Compare young people with older people about attitudes to the world. Who Young people Older people Where What to see/feel How to react How to work Deeply in the hair At the top of the hair See more mysterious things, have more questions Feel comfortable. Have less questions Ask questions, find answers Accept things without asking questions Study how things work Do things regularly

11 Answer the questions according to your understanding to the letters.
Does Sophie enjoy reading the letters? How do you know about it. 2. What image does the philosopher use to explain the mystery of the universe? 3. What was Sophie’s reaction to what she had read? What did she do when her mother got home? How did her mother react?

12 Does Sophie enjoy reading the letters? How do you know about it.
Yes, she enjoys reading the letters. There are some hints in the exacts: “Sophie had hoped to find another letter from the unknown sender.” “ (After reading it) Sophie thought hard about this all afternoon.”

13 2. What image does the philosopher use to explain
He uses a magic trick to explain the mystery of the universe, in which the magician tricks the audience by pulling a white rabbit out of an empty hat.

14 3. What was Sophie’s reaction to what she had read?
She began thinking hard about the the white rabbit and the magic trick.

15 4. What did she do when her mother got home?
When her mother got home at five o’clock, Sophie started to ask her questions.

16 5. How did her mother react? Why did she get
Such a reaction? She got so surprised that she didn't’t answer at first.Because Sophie was usually doing her homework when she got home.

17 Read Sophie’s questions to see how Sophie understands the problem that the philosopher tries to explain. Adults accept everything without asking questions, because they think it is natural, and do things regularly without asking questions.

18 What have you learned about the problem of understanding
What have you learned about the problem of understanding? Ask yourself questions. Why do young people have more questions than older people? What is philosophy? How do you understand it? Think about the strategies in Exercise 1. What strategy did the philosopher use to make Sophie understand what philosophy is? How can you understand more easily?

19 Test your memory Complete the following from your memory. compare Ps. It might be better to _______ the white rabbit with the whole ________. We who live here are microscopic _______ existing in the ________ fur. But ____________ are always trying to _____ up the fine hairs of the fur in order to look into the __________ eyes. universe insects rabbit’s philosophers climb magician’s
