2 SWBAT… solve quadratic equations Mon, 4/25
Agenda Warm-up (10 min) Solving quadratic equations, ax2 + bx + c (20 min) Work on hw#5 (15 min) Warm-Up: 1. Write as a quadratic expression: (3x + 7)2 2. Factor: 6a2b3 – 3a2b 3. Solve: g2 – 15g = -50 4. Find all zeros for the function f(x) = x2 – 3x – 70 HW5: Factoring Trinomials: ax2 + bx + c 1.) 9x2 + 42x + 49 2.) 3a2b(2b2 – 1) 3.) g = 5 or g = 15 4.) x = -7 or x = 10

3 To solve quadratic equations:
1.) Set equation = 0 2.) Factor the equation 3.) Set each factor = 0 4.) Solve each variable 5.) Check both solutions The solutions of a quadratic may also be called roots, zeros or x-intercepts.

4 Factoring Trinomials: ax2 + bx + c
A function is shown. Find all zeros for the function. f(x) = 2x2 – 6x – 8 Always look for a GCF of a polynomial before you factor. 0 = 2x2 – 6x – 8 0 = 2(x2 – 3x – 4) 0 = 2(x + 1)(x – 4) x + 1 = 0 or x – 4 = 0 x = -1 or x = 4

5 Factoring Trinomials: ax2 + bx + c
A function is shown. Find all zeros for the function. f(x) = 3x2 – 10x + 7 0 = 3x2 – 10x + 7 0 = (3x – 7)(x – 1) 3x – 7 = 0 or x – 1 = 0 x = 7/3 or x = -1

6 SWBAT… solve quadratic equations Tues, 4/26
Agenda Warm-up (10 min) Quiz (20 min) Warm-Up: Solve: 2x2 – 5x – 12 = 0 Solve: 4x2 – 12x + 5 = 0 HW5: Factoring Trinomials: ax2 + bx + c (2x + 3)(x – 4) (2x – 5)(2x – 1)

7 SWBAT… apply quadratic equations Friday, 4/29
Agenda Warm-up (15 min) Vertical Motion Model (30 min) Warm-Up: Review your quiz Discuss the answers to HW#5 & HW#6 with your table – I will collect it in 15 minutes Study for Wednesday’s Test

8 Vertical Motion Model A model for the vertical motion of a projected object is given by h = -16t2 + vt + ho h is the height in feet t is the time in seconds v is the initial velocity in feet per second ho is the initial height in feet

9 Ken throws the discus at a school meet
Ken throws the discus at a school meet. The equation h = -16t2 + 95t + 6 models the throw. a. What is the initial height of the discus? b. What is the initial velocity of the discus? c. After how many seconds does the discus hit the ground? h = -16t2 + vt + ho 6 ft 95 ft/s 0 = (16t + 1)(-t + 6) t = -16/1 or t = 6 s
