3 Culture Is learned set of shared norms and practices of a particular group that direct thinking, decisions and actions. It affects health behavior and teaching learning process in many ways. It influences gender roles, sexual behavior, diet, personal hygiene, body image, drug use, exercise, communication, and educational pursuits. It also affect the way people experience and describe illness and will therefore affect the educational approach we use.

4 Age The older adult usually needs more time to learn.
Educational sessions need to be of longer durations or broken down into more sessions of shorter durations covering less information Adults lend to learn best when the information is relevant to them and has practical application Older adults often enjoy learning in a group Be cognizant of possible hearing and visual deficits

5 Socioeconomic Level Takes into account a number of factors including income, education level, occupation or employment Clients may not have the resources needed to comply the medical regimen prescribe Socioeconomic level may indicate where a client lives A lower socioeconomic level may mean that time that could be used for studying is taken up with working a part-time job.

6 Literacy The clients ability to read and understand what is being read is an essential component of learning. Materials at too high level will be useless, as they will not be understood. Materials at too low level, while of some value may be too simplistic and may even be seen as insulting. Illiteracy is often embarrassing and is not readily disclosed. However it can be profound affect on compliance, learning and health.

7 Emotional Status Depression, stress, denial, fear, and anxiety can all impact the effectiveness in teaching. The student’s ability to learn can be hampered by a host of emotional or mental health issues. This include roommate disagreement, relationship issues, separation or adjustment anxiety and fear of failure.

8 Categories of Learner Characteristics
Situation – Related Characteristics Stem form events surrounding the decision to design and deliver training. The chief focus of the instructional design effort should be directed at those affected by it. The reason, subsequent delivery of instruction to that group will presumably have the greatest impact. The broader the target audience the more general the training must be. The design team should reach consensus regarding the target audience.

9 Decision – Related Characteristics
Pertain to those making decisions about learner participation in learning. Before preparing instructional materials. The design team should clarify any issues regarding approvals to attend training and develop strategies to ensure that the target audience is who actually attends.

10 Learner – Related Characteristics
Stem from learners themselves. Consider pre-requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes and another learner characteristics that may affect the design and delivery of instruction.
