The Pacte pour la recherche (Research Pact) of 2006 defines 17 Research Clusters - Pôles de Recherche et dEnseignement Supérieur The total number of credits - 9.3 million are used to welcome 230 postdoctoral graduates over 12 months - granted to institutions for foreign postdoctoral graduate compensation has increased by 1 million Source: MESR – December 2010

11 CampusFrance CampusFrance Agence nationale pour la promotion de lenseignement supérieur français à létranger A Bridge towards the World The Bologna process has created a unified tertiary education area, which enables bridges to other tertiary education systems in the world Two semesters split the university year Since 2002 and thanks to the LMD system (Licence, Master, Doctorat, i.e. Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate), a better understanding of European diplomas makes academic exchanges easier and promotes international mobility The European Credit Transfer accumulation System (ECTS) enables equivalencies Licence corresponds to the early years of studies and is achieved in 3 years, after validating 180 credits Master is achieved in two years after validating 120 credits and Doctorat in three years

12 Universities CampusFrance France has 83 public universities (and equivalent institutions) The universities provide instruction in all fields of knowledge. They enroll 1.4 million students, including 70,000 doctoral candidates. Enrollment in the first year of university study is open to students who have earned a French baccalauréat or an equivalent secondary-school diploma. The universities provide career-oriented education (2- and 3-year professional degrees, the professional Master, and teacher training). The bulk of Frances scholarly and scientific research is done in the universities. 13 The grandes écoles CampusFrance Frances unique system Schools of engineering, the four écoles normales supérieures (ENS), institutes of political studies (IEP), schools of business and management, and schools of veterinary medicine, agronomy, and other specialized subjects. Admission is highly selective. Government-sanctioned schools confer degrees, equivalent to the European Master. Programs in the grandes écoles require from 3 to 7 years of study. The tutions fees varies by school (public institutions, see slide 18). 285,000 students are enrolled in programs at the nations grandes écoles. 14 CampusFrance A Strong Flow of Students Abroad Higher education institutions in France enroll more than 2.3 million students France is ranked 4 th in the list of host countries for foreign students (249,100 foreign students/year) after the US, UK and Australia This trend keeps increasing: between 2005 and 2009, the number of students rose of 5,3%. 15 CampusFrance Affordable Formations France carries out an equality of treatment policy Registration fees are the same for all students (national and international) All students have the same rights (healthcare rights, discounts, housing aid, university meal plans). 21 Students holding a Master or the equivalent may earn their Doctorate in 3 years of training in a doctoral department housed within an institution of higher education and research. 22 Doctoral departments the candidate are offered top-quality research support, career guidance, and professional training in research-based occupations. They support and advise candidates as they prepare their dissertation. International cooperative agreements allow candidates to conduct research abroad and prepare a jointly supervised dissertation, often leading to a double degree.
