36 Unflip the Flip Presenter(s): Teika Clavell & Scott Grumelot
Think about the “Why” first, which plays right into Gradual Release of Responsibility/MTSS. Think about what you are sending home and what you what you want your kiddos to accomplish and the misconceptions they may encounter there. Guided Notes--teaching them what to write. She is in her house, which personalizes the experience. She didn’t edit it. They watch the video in the class and she circulates while they are doing it so she can check on their understanding b/c she knows her Ss. It takes HALF the time by doing it this way. PBL--this isn’t just for AG folks. Blendspace--flipping your instruction--key to differentiating your classroom. It is S centered at their own pace. tes.com/lessons This can be incorporated into Canvas or Classroom. [Tomorrow’s Session: Virtual Field Trip] In the video that she calls a “jump start” she has music and she says that music is important to have in videos because it automatically gets the attention of Ss. She stops the video before the reaction of the experiment. She also sent it to their parents. They would watch it and she could ask them for ANYTHING! She couldn’t send home a lab and it became a partnership where they would help supply her classroom because they wanted to. When you “unflip” and keep it at school, then the content stays guided by Ts and Ss stay engaged and on track. “Students love choice no matter what age they are.” Teika Clavell

45 Turn CC on for videos. Students will read. Two Senses!
Digital Tools and Strategies to Support Literacy in the Secondary Classroom Presenter(s): Tracey -- Presentation: tinyurl.com/NCTIESDigitalLiteracy Harness the technology they Ss use already to teach literacy skills. Ss skim articles; they read bits and pieces; multiple tabs are open--surface reading, not for depth Interacting with text: old way (sharpies, high lighters, colored pencils) vs new way (annotation tools) Why? Multiple senses. Digitally with: Apple Preview (Mac only); Diigo; Scrible; DocHub; Google Docs; Annotote.co; Hypothesis Add-On; Google Read&Write Note taking (for Ss it means transcribing or writing nothing) Use Today’s meet or Padlet as a Reader’s Response Turn CC on for videos. Students will read. Two Senses! Many of the “annotation” tools would allow for collaborative annotation which would lead to deeper thought among students; this becomes “glossing” a term by Todd Finley It’s a form of social annotation which a platform like Diigo would support but many of the above platforms could be manipulated to support. It’s really what Ss do all the time in their social media world. Science especially needs graphic organizers for breaking down difficult content for reading comprehension.

46 Page to Screen Presenter(s):Jessica Esposito
Mini Commercials and Augmented Reality Session Description: Reading a novel for enjoyment in high school is a rarity, but since implementing augmented reality our students have started reading for pleasure. Students participate in Book to Movie Monday and Tuesday during SMART Lunch, offer suggestions, and check out books. Create displays for the Media Center and throughout the school with Aurasma and QR Codes that link to the Official Movie Trailers and student book talks. Feature Friday Book Tweets Unit information with the book Sold by Patricia McCormick

82 Personalize Learning through Student Agency
Presenter(s): Brittany Presentation: Using to take a quick poll - Free version - two questions - Word Clouds! Personalized learning for our students is hard!! Student Agency is about students having the ability to lead their learning and make decisions. - Not about arguing with the students Students must understand their learning differences - Not preferences, or learning styles. It is: working memory, task initiation, motivation, executive function. It may look like disengagement Take a learner profile Executive Function If your students are writing down EVERYTHING, then they are struggling with pinpointing the important stuff!! Sketchnoting can help students organize their ideas in meaningful ways. “Zone out to zone in” - Attention may look like distraction. Working Memory Deficit--immediate recall is a struggle, which can affect the depth of understanding of a concept or skill.
