1 A Flipped Classroom: Engaging Students In and Out of the Classroom
Deanna Gordon - Professor - Curry College Maryann Gallant – Professor - Curry College March 23, 2016

2 Session Outcomes How to implement a flipped classroom
How to identify resources Evaluation process: benefits and restrictions of resources Assess challenges and successes of the flipped classroom Determine ways to align critical thinking, decision making, problem solving into a traditional skills-based course

3 Getting To Know You What subject areas do you teach?
Who supports your technology? Are you faculty, staff, administration? Do you use online course materials? Do you create your own materials? Do you use publisher materials? Do you use online materials?

4 EDUCAUSE Definition “The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions.” (Educause, 2012)

5 Learning Outcomes for a Flipped Classroom
Measure learning by using a self-paced modality of delivery Engage students through short videos – viewed prior to class Allow for in class debate, discussion, activities Construct or enhance critical thinking skills by challenging student inquiry during class Accommodates students varied schedules and varied learning styles Immediate feedback on essential points i.e., taking quizzes after videos Student reflect on learning activities and gain confidence in what they have learned

6 Have You Flipped? Has anyone tried a flipped classroom before?
Tell us about your success and failures. What technology do you use in your flipped classroom? What resources do you use in your flipped classroom?

7 Courses We Have Flipped Over
Technology Literacy Student as the teacher Business Presentations Current Topics in Information Technology Web Design (HTML) Senior Seminar Tech Literacy: MyITLab, Atomic Learning, YouTube, instructor created videos and handout – student is the teacher Current Topics in IT: online articles, library databases, YouTube, traditional newspapers and periodicals Web Design: W3schools, Lynda.com, instructor created handouts and tutorials to stimulate critical thinking Business Presentations: MyITLab, Atomic Learning, YouTube, instructor created handouts, TED Talks Senior Seminar: GCF, instructor created handouts and tutorials

8 Identify Resources Faculty Assess and select course resource options
Textbook Publishers Atomic Learning/Lynda.com Other online resources such as: YouTube Ted Talks GCF LMS - Blackboard Instructor created videos/podcasts/reading materials/presentations

9 What We Are Doing – Prior to Class
Students: View videos and PowerPoint presentations Assignments: self-paced segments (quizzes, etc.) Read relevant material Collaborate using GoogleDocs and/or LMS Journal using blogs

10 What We Are Doing – During Class Ways to align critical thinking, decision making, problem solving and digital citizenship Students: Develop critical thinking skills and articulate knowledge through discussion Pose content-based scenarios to display understanding of content Journal to reflect on the interrelatedness of content delivered in and out of the classroom Course assessment is executed to mirror activities outside the classroom

11 Student Feedback “Liked the instant feedback.”
“Appreciated the 24/7 availability of assignments.” “Being able to attempt assignments more than once motivated me to get a better grade.” “I like that we can go over anything we didn't understand.” “Allowed me to take my time and practice the skills needed to learn the software.” “We need to learn before we have homework.” “You have so many opportunities to ensure you get a good grade. Having multiple attempts on all assignments allows me to understand the material before coming to class.” “I have seen improvements in myself when I use what we learned in this class for other classes and it makes me feel great about myself.” “I learned at home and see what I needed to work more on.”

12 What We Learned Does not meet everyone’s learning style
Time management skills not fully developed Self-motivation is a key Improved grade Some students need more structure Encouraging students to participate in discussions can be challenging

13 Your Thoughts Will you be the next to flip?
