6 The Church as the communion of saints
The Catholic church teaches that all Christians have a special bond of unity. This unity is called the communion of saints. So we can pray for other Christians (who are in the communion of saints) whether they are alive or dead. We can ask other Christians to pray for us. We can still ask them to do this when they are dead. This is called interceding, we can ask them to intercede for us. This is why Catholics pray to saints and why there are often statues of saints In catholic buildings.
