3 What is Flu? Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

4 What is Flu? It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in: OR Hospitalization Death

5 What is Flu? Influenza infects the nose, throat, and lungs.

6 Signs and Symptoms Fever* or feeling feverish/chills Cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches Headaches Fatigue (very tired) Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, this is more common in children than adults. -People who have the flu often feel some or all of these

7 How Flu spreads? mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.

9 Period of contagiousness You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.

10 Onset of symptoms The time from when a person is exposed to flu virus to when symptoms begin is about 1 to 4 days, with an average of about 2 days.

11 Complications -Complications of flu can include: bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as: congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

12 Prevention The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

13 Prevention CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions: staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent hand washing to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

14 Treatment There are influenza antiviral drugs that can be used to treat flu illness. Consult a Doctor before buying and Medications.

15 Home Treatment Drink plenty of fluids Sip some soup Get plenty of rest Try a warm cloth on the nose Gargle with saltwater
