2 Unit 2 Vocabulary Alliance (U.S.)- Agreement between countries to aid and support one another (57) Artisan (N.C.)- A skilled craftsperson, such as a carpenter or blacksmith. (8) Backcountry (N.C.)- The land that was “back” of the real “country”, the land near the coast (4) Boycott (U.S.)-Organized campaign to refuse to buy or use certain goods and services. (147) French & Indian War (N.C.)- War fought in North America from 1754 to 1761 between France and Great Britain over which European kingdom would control North America. (4)

3 Unit 2 Vocabulary Frontier (N.C.)- The area at the edge or just beyond a settled area. (4) Gentry (U.S.)- Upper class of colonial society. (110) Indentured Servant (U.S.)- Person who signs a contract to work for a set number of years in exchange for ocean passage to the colonies. (111) Lords Proprietors (N.C.)- One of eight English aristocrats to whom King Charles II gave a charter for the Carolina Colony. (3)

4 Unit 2 Vocabulary Middle Passage (p113 U.S.)- The voyage where captives were loaded onto a slave ship and transported across the Atlantic Ocean. Militia (N.C.)- A group of citizen soldiers. (4) Quit-Rents (N.C.)- An annual land tax paid to the Proprietors. (3) Yeoman (N.C.)- A farmer who tilled the land he or some family member owned. (8)
