4 History 1840 - 1850-during the gold rush Chinese arrived in significant numbers -worked in goldmines 1870-the south east side of New York was home for 1,100 Chinese > Chinatown was born 1882 - 1943-Exclusion Act > only men were allowed to immigrate to the US 1900 -there were only about 150 women for 7,000 Chinese living in Manhattan after 1943-the number of immigrants grew up

6 Population -about 150,000 Chinese people -greatest Chinese settlement outside of Asia -biggest immigration rate of NY

7 Geography -located on the lower east-side of Manhattan -about 2 square miles -north: Kenmore and Delancey streets -south: East and Worth streets -east: Allen street -west: Broadway

9 Canal Street -main street and traffic route of Chinatown -tourist trap and strip mall -known for its many jewellery shops and banks -large crowds, noise, traffic nightmare

11 Chinatown today -home of the majority of Chinese New Yorkers -tourist attraction: -booming fruit and fish markets -shops of knickknacks and sweets -the most popular aspect are the hundreds of restaurants

12 Restaurants -became an important staple by the end of the 19th century -today more than 300 restaurants -many visitors come for the authentic food amidst the exotic atmosphere -Chinatown closes quite early for New York >many restaurants close by 11 p.m.
