3 The Management Myth l Until recently, most thought management and leadership were the same thing. l Management focuses on maintaining systems and processes. l Management can maintain direction, but it can’t start or change direction. Exit

4 l To move people in a new direction, you need leadership. l Leadership is about influencing people to follow and to change. l Organizations need both management and leadership. Exit

8 The Entrepreneur Myth l We assume entrepreneurs and sales people are good leaders. l People may buy what they sell, but nobody is usually following them. l At best the entrepreneur is able to persuade for the moment. l They hold no long-term influence over anyone. Exit

9 The Knowledge Myth l Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” l Many people believe that those who possess knowledge are leaders. l You can visit any university and meet intelligent faculty who cannot lead. Exit

10 The Pioneer Myth l Are you leading if you are in front of the crowd? l Being first or in the front is not leading. l To be a leader people have to voluntarily follow you. Exit

11 The Position Myth l Some think leadership is based on position. l Position does not make a leader, the leader makes the position. l You can lose your position and still lead informally. Exit

12 The Work Harder Myth l Some think that anyone can be a good leader if they work hard enough. l More work effort is not the answer. We only have a finite amount of energy. l It is about working smarter, not harder. Exit

13 Leaders Are Born, Not Made Myth l Leaders are made. l Innate characteristics can add to an individual’s ability to lead. l Life experiences can greatly influence leadership potential. Exit
