3 Purpose of SATS Test pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the key stage 2 programmes of study Provide a snapshot of a pupils attainment at the end of key stage 2 Statutory assessments

4 Key Changes ‘The new national curriculum has been taught in all LA maintained primary schools, and some academies, in England since September 2014. Those pupils who are at the end of KS2 in May 2016 will be the first to be assessed against the new National Curriculum.

5 From 2016, KS2 national curriculum test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead. There will only be 1 set of tests for each subject. The tests will include a small number of questions designed to assess the most able pupils so separate tests, such as the previous level 6 tests, are no longer required.

6 English reading Greater focus on fictional texts. English grammar, punctuation and spelling Greater focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested. Technical terms in grammar tested. Spelling patterns form the basis of spellings tested. Mathematics The mental mathematics test has been replaced with an arithmetic test.

8 Preparations Weekly SATs revision homework tasks. Covering SATs-style questions in lessons. Practice SATs tests carried out in school. Additional SATs homework (targeted). Additional SATs sessions before, during and after school.

9 Reading Children will be given one paper - lasting 1 hour. It will be based on reading comprehension of three to four texts, with a total of 35 to 40 questions. In this new test time is divided between reading the booklet and answering the questions. Preparation carried out through sessions in class.

10 KS2 English reading Greater focus on fictional texts

11 English grammar, punctuation, spelling test This will focus on essential English skills. Paper 1 comprises 40 to 50 short-answer questions covering grammar and punctuation; Paper 2 is a spelling test with 20 questions.

13 SATs Maths test Arithmetic and Mathematical Reasoning Paper 1 - Arithmetic 30 minute paper - questions based on all four operations including fractions – marks awarded for working out. Paper 2 - Mathematical Reasoning 40 minute paper - Children have access to a ruler, angle measurer, and a mirror - marks awarded for working out. Paper 3 - Mathematical Reasoning 40 minute paper - Children have access to a ruler, angle measurer, and a mirror. -marks awarded for working out.

17 Writing Writing from across the whole of Year 6 will continue to be assessed by the class teacher and will be subject to moderation by the LA.

18 SATS breakfast club Breakfast club is Monday- Thursday during SATS week. 8.30am
