2 Why groupwork? -Class had told me they prefer to work in groups. -They find it difficult listening to the teacher so if I could get them doing a more pupil centred project it would be easier to manage the class. -It was also a class with extremely low literacy levels so the use of ICT was helpful. -This is their last year doing Spanish as they will take extra-literacy lessons from next year. They are not following a scheme of work so I can teach the topics I choose. They are not following a scheme of work so I can teach the topics I choose. Why this topic? - I had done some work on maps before with them which they had enjoyed and loved talking about where they lived. 3 3 pupils Trihanna: Had been working steadily better for me. Jay: Service child. Initially reacted badly to project. Has only just moved to Eltham and hates it. Once I´d made it clear that he didn´t have to do it on Eltham he engaged with the work and worked well. Luke: Lazy boy generally but the clear expectations of how much work he had to complete by the end of each lesson made him work better.

4 Summary How long? What happened in each lesson? -The project lasted for 5 weeks. One double lesson (100 minutes) a week. -1) introduced topic and new vocab -2) 3) first part introduced vocab, second part, created slides on powerpoint on what we learnt. -4) Got to research different aspects of topic and make powerpoint presentable. -5) Presented powerpoints. Wrote written assessment. How long? What happened in each lesson? -The project lasted for 5 weeks. 5 Gathering evidences -They presented their projects and peer assessed one another. -I rotated and at the end of each lesson checked how much work had been completed. -They presented their projects and peer assessed one another. -I rotated and at the end of each lesson checked how much work had been completed.

6 Evaluation Student reactions: -Like using computers because its easier. -More relaxed -Some unhappy with initial groupings. My reaction: -Minimum work expected completed by all. Good. -In some groups some students appeared to do more work than others. Student reactions: -Like using computers because its easier. -More relaxed -Some unhappy with initial groupings. 7 3 pupils’ progress Trihanna - Chose to create her own presentation. However she worked well and created an impressive powerpoint and did well in the final written assessment. 8 What I have learnt… -Group work can be used effectively as can ICT. -It will not however magically eliminate major problems in the classroom such as behaviour management issues, lack of engagement or poor calibre of work. -The way in which pupils are grouped needs careful consideration. (who? What size?) -Students not completing the task properly when on computers need to be taken of them and made to do textbook work in silence if they are to be allowed back on. -What slides need to be created and what work is expected of them needs to be completed by the end of the lesson needs to be clearly explained and modelled. -Group work can be used effectively as can ICT. -It will not however magically eliminate major problems in the classroom such as behaviour management issues, lack of engagement or poor calibre of work. -The way in which pupils are grouped needs careful consideration.
