RE Nottinghamshire Agreed syllabus 2015-2020 The Banks Road Approach…..

The aim of Religious Education in Nottinghamshire is that pupils will know about and understand a range of religions and world views. They will express ideas and insights of their own into the significant human questions which religions address, gaining and deploying the skills needed to study religion.

The Key skills children will develop are: Investigating religions and world views through varied experiences and disciplines Reflecting on and expressing their own ideas and the ideas of others with increasing creativity and clarity Becoming increasingly able to be reasonable in their responses to religions and world views

The 3 aims of RE in Nottinghamshire A. Know about and understand a range of religions and world views, so that they can: A.1 Recall and name different beliefs and practices, including festivals, worship, rituals and ways of life in order to find out about the meanings behind them; A.2 Retell and suggest meanings to some religious and moral stories, exploring and discussing sacred writings and sources of wisdom and recognising the communities from which they come; A.3 Recognise some different symbols and actions which express a communities way of life, appreciating some similarities between communities.

B. Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and world views, so that they can: B.1 Ask and respond to questions about what communities do and why, so they can identify what difference belonging to a community might make; B.2 Observe and recount different ways of expressing identity and belonging, responding sensitively for themselves; B.3 Notice and respond sensitively to some similarities between different religions and world views.

C Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and world views, so that they can: C.1 Explore questions about belonging, meaning and truth so that they can express their own ideas and opinions in response using words, music, art or poetry; C.2 Find out about and respond with ideas to examples of cooperation between people who are different; C.3 Find out about questions of right and wrong and begin to express their ideas and opinions in response.

Which religions and beliefs are to be studied? The Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus requires that all pupils learn from Christianity in each key stage. In addition, pupils will learn from the principal religions represented in the UK, in line with the law. These are Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Judaism. Furthermore, children from families where non-religious world views are held are represented in almost all of our classrooms. These world views, including for example Humanism, will also be the focus for study. Religions are to be studied in depth as follows:

At KS1 we are required to study Christianity and at least 1 other religion. Recommended: Judaism We need to consider faiths of children within our school.

Organizing RE curriculum time By law RE should be a minimum of 5% curriculum time. At FS2 & KS1 this is 36 hrs per year. RE is legally required for all pupils. RE is different to assembly. Flexible delivery of RE is often good practice e.g (themed day / week) RE should be taught in clearly identifiable time. There should be coherence and progression across year groups.

Respect for all, Global learning, British Values and community cohesion Learning for diversity Reducing intolerance Visits and visitors Breadth – cohesion for all Planned support for teaching (see resources on server)

British (Banks Road) values and how RE can support them School inspection, from Sept 2014, explores and judges the contribution schools make to actively promoting British Values. Mutual Tolerance Respectful attitudes Democracy The Rule of Law Individual Liberty

Curriculum content Progression through objectives that make links between religions required to teach and religions relevant to local community. Programmes of study are to help teachers plan but are not prescriptive – they can be adapted. Where possible should study objectives at relevant times of year. 4 key areas per year group.

Programs of Study Y1 – 1.2 – Myself 1.1 – Celebrations and festivals 1.3 – Stories of Jesus 1.7 – What does it mean to belong? Y2 – 1.4 – Symbols 1.5 – Leaders 1.6 – Believing 1.8 – Jewish and Christian stories

When? New curriculum became statutory in Sept 2014 but RE only published Jan 2015. Need to start using it ASAP Each year group plan / teach 1 or 2 of their objectives by July 2015.

Keep talking / sharing ideas (any problems / resource needs just ask)
