2 12.1 Students explain the fundamental principles and moral values of American democracy as expressed in the U.S. Constitution and other essential documents of American democracy. 1.Analyze the influence of ancient Greek, Roman, English, and leading European political thinkers such as John Locke, Charles-Louis Montesquieu, Niccolò Machiavelli, and William Blackstone on the development of American government.

3 INSTRUCTIONS  In your group, you will each read John Locke, Second Treatise on Government  This is your copy, feel free to write on it

4 INSTRUCTIONS  After you are all finished reading, discuss and write down a summary of his main ideas (minimum of 5) in complete sentences.  Do this on a group paper (I will give you the paper— write in large letters)

6 WHAT DID YOU FIND?  Natural rights  Perfect freedom in a natural state  Give up freedom for security  Consent of the governed  Judges need to be impartial  Need legislatures  Government of men can be changed by governed

7 TODAY  Are there any modern situations that use John Locke’s ideas?
