Scheme of Redemption

Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet 2 of 25

Recap "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as one book, with 66 different chapters, and the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin 3 of 25

Recap Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” Genesis 12-50 – “Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph” 4 of 25

Recap God created the world, and everything in it, and was perfect Man lived in absolute peace and comfort, free of toil ad strife, free of sorrow and guilt. Genesis 3:6 occurred, sin entered the world, it changed us physically, emotionally, and spiritually 5 of 25

Recap The whole world became wholly and severely corrupt, in ways that we have never experienced God flooded the earth with water, but spared Noah, his family, and select animals on the ark The flood waters receded, and a tragic event occurs with Noah Noah gets drunk, is naked in his tent, something improper occurs when Ham walks into Noah’s tent, and Noah curses Ham’s son Canaan. Even after a global cleansing, sin is still a problem, and God MUST get to Calvary! 6 of 25

Last week… First gospel sermon preached in Genesis 3:15 – “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel” Genesis 12:3 – “And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” This is the second reference to the redemption of mankind. It would be a descendant of Abram’s, which Jesus was (Matthew 1, Luke 3) 7 of 25

Last week… “So Abraham went” 345 years had past since Noah walked off of the ark to this point when Abram left Haran In that timespan, we are not told that God had spoken to anyone else or had any sort of “this is God” activity going on Abraham also came out of paganism Joshua 24:2 - Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘From ancient times your fathers lived beyond the River, namely, Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods. 8 of 25

Three main promises to Abraham Genesis 12:1-3 – Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” 9 of 25

Three main promises to Abraham Genesis 12:6-7 – Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him. 10 of 25

Promise #1 God would make a great nation from Abraham (Gen 12:2) Gen 13:16 – I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. Gen 15:5 - [God] took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be." 11 of 25

Promise #2 God would give the land of Canaan to Abraham’s descendants (Gen 12:7) Genesis 13:15, 17 – The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever...Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you.” 12 of 25

Promise #3 In Abraham, all the families of the earth would be blessed (Gen 12:3) What is the promise referring to? Jesus! 13 of 25

Promise #3 In Abraham, all the families of the earth would be blessed (Gen 12:3) Matthew 1:2-15 - Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers...Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. 14 of 25

Promise #3 In Abraham, all the families of the earth would be blessed (Gen 12:3) Luke 3:23-38 - the son of Joseph, the son of Eli... the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Heber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. 15 of 25

Abraham promises an heir Gen 15:2-4 - Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.” 4 Then behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” 16 of 25

God’s covenant with Abraham Gen 15 - God tells Abraham to prepare a sacrifice, and then God uses this to make a covenant with Abraham Gen 15:12-13 – Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him. God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. 17 of 25

God’s covenant with Abraham Gen 15:14-15 – But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.” 18 of 25

Why so long? Gen 15:13 – God informs Abraham that his descendants will be enslaved and oppressed for 400 years (that’s just the Egyptian slavery) prior to inheriting the land The reason? “for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.” (Gen 15:16) What is significant about this reason? Long suffering nature of God God giving the people of the land of Canaan an opportunity to repent and turn to Him 19 of 25

Why so long? The conquest of Canaan was more than just God fulfilling a promises to Abraham It was God’s judgement upon the people of the land of Canaan This is important to understand, as many charge God with being hateful, unloving, and brutal because of what happened during the conquest But, this is judgement, much like the flood and much like Sodom and Gomorrah 20 of 25

Coming Up Genesis 12-50 – Continue studying with redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Isaac promised Ismael and Isaac 21 of 25
