2 Affordable Housing in the City of Los Angeles - The affordable housing program within the City of Los Angeles, provides public housing units to qualified low income residents. Rent within these units are federally subsidized. - Eligibility is determined by income level and the number of individuals within a family. -According to the United States Census Bureau, the average household size in Los Angeles is 2.98. Set by the Department of Regional Planning, the 2010 income limit in which a 3 person household would qualify for assistance is set at $37,300. - The City of Los Angeles currently provides affordable housing to over 6,500 families.

Considering a 3 person household size, the L.A. Homes within highly dense residential districts may have increased access to services and community facilities. Just over 15% of affordable housing units are located within census tracts that have a lower number of overall housing units. About 93% of affordable housing units are located within census tracts with the lowest median income. Department of planning has set the following income limits to determine eligibility for affordable housing: Very Low Income: $37,300 Lower Income $59,650 Moderate Income: $68,050 Older homes are more likely to leak energy; therefore, an increased amount of energy must be used in order to maintain temperature. Additionally, older properties, designed prior to the introduction of modern seismic codes, have a higher risk of damage during an earthquake. About 87% of affordable housing units are within areas that were primarily built prior to 1960.

5 Transit -According to a report published by the American Planning Association on Pedestrian and Transit- Friendly Design, the farthest most people will walk for a bus stop is ¼ mile. -Approximately 62% of affordable housing units are located within walking distance of the metro or a Rapid bus line. Instead, food is often purchased at smaller neighborhood stores that typically have higher prices. -- About 68% of affordable housing units are located within 1 mile from a large grocery store.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, these benefits include: -reduced crime - reduced stress -- foster psychological well-being -- increase physical activity -- create a sense of place and community -- Approximately 32% of affordable housing units are located within walking distance to a park.

Below are the amenities listed by the highest ranked service/facility to the lowest: -- Education -- Transit -- Grocery -- Parks & Adult Education - Approximately 74% of affordable housing units are located in areas with minimal or the least amount of access to facilities and services in comparison to other areas in the city. In the future, the development of affordable housing should be located in the areas identified on the map with the most access to amenities.
