Sustainability: Is the “ability and capacity to endure.” describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. The EPA (1969) declared as its goal a national policy to "create and maintain conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations of Americans."

Fact: Today, 80 percent of the world's marine populations are fully fished, over-exploited, depleted, or recovering from depletion. With seafood growing in demand, it’s critical that sustainable fishing practices are followed if wild-caught seafood is going to be available in the future and if farmed seafood is going to be able to supplement wild fish supplies.

“Sustainable Fisheries” Sustainable Seafood Recommendations are based on many factors including: (1)Overfishing (impacts on stock) (2)By-catch (impacts on other species) (3)Management (of a fishery) (4)Habitat (& Ecosystem)Destruction

Is it Sustainable? Yes it is! It is Green Fish Approved! http://safinacenter.org/documents/2014/05/crab-snow-gulf-st-lawrence-full-species-report.pdf

MSC Certification ( Marine Stewardship Council) Whole Foods starting using this 3 rd party certification in 1999 which ensures that their wild caught seafood has been sourced responsibly. Considerations include overfishing, by-catch and fishery management issues as well as the “Chain of Custody.”

“Responsibly Farmed” AQUACULTURE…ASK THESE QUESTIONS… Where is farm located (i.e. where does species come from?) What was water quality for the species (farm conditions)? What was species fed (or not fed)? (i.e. use of chemicals, antibiotics, hormones etc.)?

“Responsibly Farmed” What does the Responsibly Farmed™ logo stand for? The Whole Foods Market ® “Responsibly Farmed” logo means that the product meets our strict Whole Foods Market Quality Standards for finfish and shrimp. No other grocery store or fish market has standards like ours for keeping farmed seafood healthy and for protecting the environment. The logo also means that the product has been third-party verified to ensure our standards are being met.
