Curriculum The most significant impact comes from increased expectation … More demands have been put on pupils of all ages Emphasis on DEPTH and BREADTH rather than rushing on to the next stage.

Some Key Changes in English Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling Handwriting – not previously assessed – now expected to be fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children being taught debating and presenting skills

Some Key Changes in Maths Five-year-olds expected to learn to count up to 100 and learn number bonds to 20 Simple fractions (1/4 and 1/2) are taught from KS1 By the age of nine, children will be expected to know times tables up to 12x12

Assessment The Department for Education felt levels were too vague and complicated for parents and not very good at helping them understand their child’s progress; there were also concerns that the levels system could contribute to children developing a "fixed mindset" about their ability and potential for growth.
