THE BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE JOHN 2:1-11 GOSPEL OF JOHN SERIES #8

SO FAR… JESUS IS GOD. JOHN 1:1,2 WITHOUT HIM – NOTHING! JOHN 1:3-5 CHOSEN TO BEAR THE TORCH JOHN 1:6-9 REJECTERS AND RECEIVERS JOHN 1:10-13 HE CAME, MY GAIN JOHN 1:14-18 ASK ME ABOUT MY SAVIOR JOHN 1:19-34 THREE GENERATIONS BORN IN THREE DAYS JOHN 1:35-51

JOHN 2:1-11 NKJ On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine." 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it." 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the Master of the Feast." And they took it. 9 When the Master of the Feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the Master of the Feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!" 11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

THE DOCTRINE OF OBEDIENCE OBEDIENCE IS THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS FOR A NEW DISCIPLE. OBEDIENCE IS A SECRET OF DEVELOPMENT IN A GROWING DISCIPLE. OBEDIENCE IS A MARK OF MATURITY FOR AN ADVANCED DISCIPLE. OBEDIENCE IS THE RECURRING THEME IN THE TEACHING OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. JOHN 14:15,21; 15:10; ACTS 1:2; ROM. 13:8-10; I COR. 14:37; I THESS. 4:1,2; I JN 2:3; 3:22,24; 5:3; II JN 1:6; REV. 14:12.

IN THIS PASSAGE WE SEE THAT BIBLICAL OBEDIENCE IS… ENTIRE IN ITS SCOPE – “WHATSOEVER” WHATSOEVER IS WHAT JESUS SAYS! – JN 14:21,24-26; ACTS 1:2 WHATSOEVER IS HIS WORD – I JN 2:4,5 WHATSOEVER IS HIS WORD THROUGH PAUL – I COR 4:37; I THESS. 4:2 WHATSOEVER IS WHAT PLEASES HIM – I JN 3:22 EXCLUSIVE IN ITS SUBORDINATION – “HE” HE - LORD, MASTER, THE HEAD, THE DOOR, THE WAY…, THE SHEPHERD, ALPHA AND OMEGA WE - HIS DISCIPLES, HIS CREATION, MEMBERS OF HIS BODY, HIS BRIDE, HIS SHEEP JOHN 10:27 EXACT IN ITS SPECIFICATION – “IT” YOU HEAR IT – YOU KNOW IT – YOU DO IT IT’S AVAILABLE – IT’S CLEAR – IT’S NON-NEGOTIABLE – IT’S URGENT – IT’S BLESSED

THANKS DEAR FRIEND, WLS, FOR THE BONES OF THIS OUTLINE I HEARD YOU PREACH SO MANY YEARS AGO. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN MY PRAYERS. GOD BLESS YOU. YOUR LAST WORDS TO ME WERE, “…SEE YOU IN HEAVEN.”

LET ME SAY THIS… DON’T ASSUME THAT ALL WINES IN THE BIBLE ARE THE SAME. DON’T ASSUME THAT ALL WINE IN THE BIBLE IS ALCOHOLIC. DON’T ASSUME THAT ALL WINE IN THE BIBLE IS COMMENDABLE. DON’T ASSUME THAT ALL WINE IN THE BIBLE IS SIMILAR TO TODAY’S WINE. DON’T ASSUME THAT THE MODERN CHRISTIAN IS BIBLICALLY ACCURATE OR CORRECT IN THEIR OPEN VIEW OF ALCOHOL JUST BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY ARE. DON’T ASSUME THAT EVERYONE IN YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY OR FRIENDSHIP WILL BE UNHARMED AND SELF- CONTROLLED BY YOUR RECREATIONAL USE OF ALCOHOL. DON’T ASSUME THAT THE WEAKER BROTHER WILL BE OK WITH YOUR CONTINUED USE OF ALCOHOL. DON’T ASSUME THAT IT WOULD HURT YOU TO SAY “NO” TO ALCOHOL. DON’T ASSUME THAT YOUR PASTOR LOVES YOU ANY LESS IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERING OPINION. I COR. 13
