Jairus and a Woman of Faith 1

Mark 5:21-43 21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. 22 One of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet 23 and *implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.” 24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him. Luke 8:40-56 40 And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. 41 And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house; 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him. Where has Jesus just come from and what miracle has stunned the disciples? He had stilled the waves in a storm and then healed a demon possessed man in Gerasenes. What was it like when Jesus arrives back at the other side of the Sea of Galilee (possibly Tiberius)? The crowds are waiting. 2

3 Mark 5:21-43 21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. What was level of prestige is there associated with Jairus? As an official of the synagogue he would have been part of the elite class of society. What was Jairus seeking from Jesus? His ability to heal physical ailments, temporal infirmities. Did Jairus act as someone who was of the elite class? No, he got down on his knees and implored Jesus to help his daughter. What should Jairus of been seeking from Jesus? Seeking for his daughter was good but seeking after the wisdom of God should of been his ultimate desire.

Luke 8:43-44 43 And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. Mark 5:25-29 25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 4 How much had this woman suffered? She had been hemorrhaging for 12 years, had all kinds of things probably done by physicians, she was now broke, and the bleeding was worse than it had ever of been. Why did she approach Jesus the way she did? She wanted to be healed but did not want to draw any attention to herself. Why did she want to be inconspicuous?

Leviticus 15:25-27 25 ‘Now if a woman has a discharge of her blood many days, not at the period of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond that period, all the days of her impure discharge she shall continue as though in her menstrual impurity; she is unclean. 26 Any bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be to her like her bed at menstruation; and every thing on which she sits shall be unclean, like her uncleanness at that time. 27 Likewise, whoever touches them shall be unclean and shall wash his clothes and bathe in water and be unclean until evening. 5 What was this woman in Jewish society? Unclean. What happens to someone if they just touch something she has bled on? They are unclean. What is the impact to someone who is unclean? They are ostracized, she cannot participate in the traditions of the Jewish society or any other facet of Jewish society. What could have been the impact to Jesus of her touching Him? Some could of considered Him unclean.

Mark 5:30-32 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. Luke 8:45-46 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me.” 6 What indicated to Jesus the woman had touched Him and was healed? He felt the power of the Holy Spirit in Him go out and heal her. How amazing is it He knew that the woman had touched Him? He was pressed on all sides by people who were asking for help or wanting to just be near Him so to know of the one specific person just barely touching Him shows how integral He and the Spirit are. What was the disciples response? Are you kidding me! How are we supposed to know.

Mark 5:33-34 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” Luke 8:47-48 47 When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” 7 What was the woman’s response? She was frightened that she had been discovered but she did come forward and admit it was her who touched her. What was Jesus’s response? Compassion and encouragement, He recognizes her faith that has brought her to be healed by the Spirit. How does this relate to us? Our faith is what bring us to have our souls healed from sin and saved from being lost. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Mark 5:35-37 35 While He was still speaking, they *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” 36 But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, *said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe.” 37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. Luke 8:49-56 49 While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.” 50 But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, “Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother. 8 While woman explains what has happened to her to Jesus, what else happens? Some of the people who were at Jairus’ home tells him his daughter has died. What might have been Jairus’s response when he heard the news? To leave Jesus and return to lament over the loss of his daughter and take care of his daughter’s burial. What was Jesus’s response when He heard the news? He encouraged Jairus not to be afraid and that his daughter would be healed.

Mark 5:38-39 38 They *came to the house of the synagogue official; and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. 39 And entering in, He *said to them, “Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep.” Luke 8:52 52 Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep.” 9 Why did Jesus say the child is just asleep, did He know she was dead? We do not know why He said she was asleep, possibly to help alieve their grief.

Mark 5:40 40 They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was. Luke 8:53 53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. 10 What was their response? They laughed at Him. They probably thought He was an idiot. What did they lack? Faith in Him. Should Jairus and the crowd gathered in his home of known that Jesus can raise the dead?

Luke 7:11-17 11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” 14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. 11 Why did Jesus heal the young man? Because He had compassion on the mother. Note: Nain is about 20 miles away from where Jesus heals Jairus’s daughter.

Mark 5:41-42 41 Taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. Luke 8:54-55 54 He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Child, arise!” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat. 12 How quickly was the daughter healed? Immediately, she got up, walked, and took food. How similar is what Jesus says to the man versus what He said to Jairus’ daughter? Very much the same. What was the response of those who were there? Astonishment.

Mark 5:43 43 And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat. Luke 8:56 56 Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened. 13 Why did Jesus tell them to tell no one? What was His purpose for coming to this world?

Mark 2:14-17 14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He *said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him. 15 And it *happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And hearing this, Jesus *said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” 14 How does Jesus describe Himself here? As a physician. Doesn’t a physician heal people? Yes. What sickness is it He came to heal? Our sick and dead spirit.

Mark 10:43-45 43 But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” 15 How was He to heal our sickness? To die on the cross as a ransom for our souls. So why did he tell them not to tell anyone of what He had done?
