1 www.postersession.com Methods Conclusions Title of the Research Study PEOPLE WHO DID THE STUDY School name Logo Figure #1 Bibliography 1.Bibliography is your works cited 2.List any sources you used for your project 3.For the Urban Heat Island Project it was Notebook pages 6-10 Data table- enter your data into Microsoft Excel and copy and paste the data table here. Academic Poster Rubric 1-2 data table and graph present, 3-4 A proper data table and graph may be missing necessary parts, 5-8 A proper data table and graph with all necessary parts, Necessary Parts include: The correct type of graph A proper title (what is the graph showing x-axis and y-axis combined) Axis titles and labels and units of measurement Questions you will answer no matter what study we do: 1. Was your hypothesis supported? “The hypothesis was supported/not supported by the data” then tell us what the data said. If you hypothesize that water makes plants grow taller than soda then you would tell me your hypothesis is not supported because the soda plant grew 20cm high and the water plant only grew 10 cm high. 2. Review your results in words. Our soda plant grew 20 cm high. Our milk plant grew 9cm high. Our water plant grew 10cm high. 3.What types of error were in the experiment?- this is a serious part of your conclusion- don’t ignore this part (example) The errors in this experiment were that we had different people take measurements each time. We also did not take measurements in the same place on every object. 4.What could you change to improve this research study? Think about what error you had- can you improve your study by not making those errors? Did you actually test what your hypothesis was about? If you say that plants cause a heat island and the only thing you measure are plants…how do you know it is the plants and not the roads making the heat island? 5.What is the next question you can ask after this experiments’ results that will allow further research? Are the results the same on other campuses? What about downtown? Any additional questions that relate to what you studied. This is always written in a paragraph and does not use pronouns. UHI Rubric 1-2 Is able to state what is learned To earn a higher score we use the specific rubric to the assignment: 3-4 Is able to describe what the lab results mean to someone Tell me what your lab results mean about the urban heat island and how the objects around us cause the heat island 5-6 Is able to explain why you think the results are important or significant After you tell me the above information, explain to my why this is important to society/environment/economy 7Is able to discuss connect the lab results to 3 real world situations After you’ve put in the meaning and importance from above, relate the information to 3 real world situations- urban heat islands are caused by the everyday things around us- think about how we build buildings, where we put vegetation or don’t put vegetation, materials roads are made from, etc 8Is able to evaluate the pros and cons of the lab results as they apply to the real world. once you’ve done the stuff for 3-7 explain the pros and cons of the choices from your real world example Introduction Provide background on the topic of study; this means tell me about the topic we are studying What did you choose to study Why did you choose to study that What was your hypothesis- remember you can only hypothesize about one treatment What were your independent variables What were your dependent variables What were the controls Written in paragraph form. This is how it is scored: the more you tell me about heat islands the higher the score, but it has to connect to outside world. UHI Rubric: If provided a question, student can write a hypothesis and identify the variables. 3-4 score Academic poster rubric: 1-2 state the requested information in the introduction from a resource, 3-4 understand the requested information in the introduction, 5-6 describe information in the introduction 7 Connects of information in the introduction to outside information, Materials list: List the materials from your lab sheet. Academic Poster: 1-8 complete materials list Results Logo Order online at https://www.postersession.com/order/ Write your procedural steps clearly enough for anyone else to follow. 1.Gather materials 2.Tell us what you will be collecting data about 3.Tell us what objects specifically you will be observing/measuring 4.Tell us any details about the controls: example: measure at 2 feet above the ground; measure in full sun, etc. UHI rubric 5-6 If provided a question, student is able to write a hypothesis, identify variables and set up a controlled experiment with minimal errors. Academic Poster Rubric 1-2 a methods section may be vague, 3-4 a methods section that can be followed by a another student possibly vague 5-6 a methods section that can be followed by a another student/teacher, 7 a methods section that can be followed by a stranger to produce accurate results, 8 a methods section that can be followed by a stranger to produce accurate results, Figure #1 represents your graph of your data. Using the data table you completed above using Microsoft Excel, click on Insert, then select the chart that looks like the graph completed in your notebook.
