Queensland University of Technology CRICOS No. 00213J Description Orchids: My Intersex Adventure is an autobiographical documentary film directed and produced by Dr Phoebe Hart, in association with Screen Queensland and Screen Australia, and grew out of a PhD research project based at Queensland University of Technology. It follows Dr Hart as she comes clean on her journey of self-discovery to embrace her future and reconcile the past shame and family secrecy surrounding her intersex condition. Despite her mother’s outright refusal to be in the film, Phoebe decides she must push on with her quest to resolve her life story and connect with other intersex people on camera. With the help of her sister Bonnie and support from her partner James, she hits the open road and reflects on her youth. Orchids: My Intersex Adventure took out Best Documentary (General) at the 2010 ATOM Awards and won best film by popular vote at the 2010 Brisbane International Film Festival, where it received its world premiere. Phoebe Hart was awarded Best Direction in a Documentary (Stand Alone) at the 2012 Australian Directors Guild Awards for the film. In 2012, it received a Samsung AACTA/AFI Awards Nomination for Best Documentary Under One Hour. It was also nominated for Best Documentary at the IF Awards 2011. Phoebe was invited to present her film in person at Adelaide Film Festival, Mardi Gras Film Festival, Mix Copenhagen, Hamburg Queer Film Festival, Pornfilmfestival Berlin, BFI London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and Outfest Los Angeles and she participated in several Skype conversations with audiences at screenings abroad. Orchids was first broadcast on ABC1 Television in Australia (28 January 2012), followed by TVE Spain, UR Swedish Educational Television, Schweizer Fernsehen (Switzerland), ARTE Germany/France, Showtime USA, France Télévisions, DBS Israel and ArtMedia (Russia and Eastern Europe). Further, it has been screened at a range of academic, medical and scientific conferences and gatherings. It is distributed by First Hand Films and Women Make Movies. Traditional research outputs from the film include an awarded PhD exegesis (Orchids: Intersex and Identity in Documentary), two journal articles (one peer reviewed), conference papers, a book chapter and two forthcoming book chapters.
