4  Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political - New York Times  A morally and civically responsible individual recognizes himself or herself as a member of a larger social fabric and therefore considers social problems to be at least partly his or her own; such an individual is willing to see the moral and civic dimensions of issues, to make and justify informed moral and civic judgments, and to take action when appropriate. - New York Times SOME DEFINITIONS

5  Civic life is the public life of the citizen concerned with the affairs of the community and nation as contrasted with private or personal life, which is devoted to the pursuit of private and personal interests.  Politics is a process by which a group of people, whose opinions or interests might be divergent, reach collective decisions that are generally regarded as binding on the group and enforced as common policy. 13  From federal immigration laws to potholes and bus service, our lives are affected daily by the elected officials who represent us. Civic engagement means being involved in the civic life of your community - through voting, public forums, marches and demonstrations, volunteering, and much more. It means working together with friends, family, and your community to make change in a way you couldn't do alone. WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE US?
