1 Introduction to Speech & Research Ninth Grade Block Miss Smeltzer tsmeltzer@derryasd.k12.pa.us

2 Purpose To develop research and public speaking skills as they are connected to the Pennsylvania Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Standards and Anchors

3 Course Outline Students will develop skills that will lead to success in research, writing and public speaking through the use of traditional and nontraditional resources. Students will use Microsoft Word and Power Point to create a projects consisting of a research paper following the APA format, and an informative speech utilizing Power Point as a visual aide.

4 Prior to beginning work on the final project, students will complete several short presentations to practice public speaking skills Students will be introduced electronic databases including Facts on File Reference Library.

5 Grading All grades are project oriented---spoken or written Late work will result in the loss of points Failure to turn in late work will result in a zero on the assignment

6 “I can’t” and” I won’t” are unacceptable. As long as you are trying your best you cannot fail. YOU choose to fail when you do not turn in work and participate! I do not give you a grade, you EARN your grades!!!!!!!!!! You are a young adult, if you choose not to do the work, it is your decision to fail!

7 Rules Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings Bring your block binder and something to write with everyday! Listen to instructions Be respectful of others Remain in your seat until the bell rings

8 Never be afraid to try something different or learn something new!!!!!!!!! Keep your hands to yourself (away from others and away from the computer wiring, etc. Remember your password Be responsible for yourself! THE END OF DAY 1

9 Communication Communication is a process that involves three things: 1. The Sender 2. The Message 3. The receiver

10 The MESSAGE : messages can be in the form of verbal and nonverbal communication

13 COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN Interference: Two types Internal External

14 Types of Interference Defined Internal interference occurs within the individual External interference occurs in the environment
