2 Plan on Creating Two Outlines  Start by creating a working/prep. outline  Organizes and firms up main points;  Develops supporting points to substantiate the main points;  Contains all of your speech points.

3 Plan on Creating Two Outlines (cont.)  Prep/Working outline should be written in full sentence form.  A sentence outline  States all main & subordinate points in sentence form;  Uses declarative statements.

4 Plan on Creating Two Outlines (cont.)  The speaking outline (delivery outline)  After completing final draft of prep/working outline  Edit prep/working to create a speaking outline  Is used when practicing your speech;  Is used when delivering your speech;  Contains ideas in condensed form.

5 Use Sentences, Phrases, or Key Words  A phrase outline  Uses partial construction of sentence form;  Encourages familiarity with the speech.

6 Use Sentences, Phrases, or Key Words (cont.)  A key-word outline  Uses smallest possible units of understanding.  Key-word or phrase outlines recommended  Encourage more eye contact with listeners  Provide greater freedom of movement  Offer better control of thoughts/actions

7 Create a Working Outline First  Begin with a working outline.  Prepare the body first.  Keep the introduction and conclusion separate.  Clearly indicate where credit is required.  Assign the speech a title.

8 Prepare a Speaking Outline for Delivery  Use the working outline’s numbering system.  Condense sentences into key words/phrases.  Use large print (16-18 point font).  Add 3-5 delivery cues to speaking outline.  place in parentheses or in the margins

9 Practice the Speech  Practice is the key to success.  Practice with short phrase/key-words.  Don’t practice using the working outline  The more you rehearse, the more comfortable you will be when you speak!
