3 Population: 33.7 Million Median age: 39.4 years Population density: 8/Mi 2 Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the American Border There are 10 provinces and three territories. The capitol is Ottowa, Ontario

4 The U.S. and Canada are friends We share the longest undefended border in the world. Canada is the largest trading partner with the U.S. Canada is the first country a U.S president visits

5 The countries are very similar Both are modern, industrialized nations with a high standard of living. Both share a common British heritage and the English language. Toronto Montreal

6 Both countries are immigrant nations with culturally diverse populations Population is growing through immigration. The native population is at ZPG. People from British Commonwealth nations can immigrate easily (India, Australia, Malaysia, Jamaica)

7 Differences Canada never left the British Empire. Loyalists from the American colonies settled there during the revolution. In 1867, Canada became a Dominion, or a self governing colony of the British Empire

8 French Canada - Quebec In 1534, Jacques Cartier claimed the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes for France. The first French settlement was established in 1606. The territory came under British rule after the Treaty of Paris in 1763, after the French and Indian Wars.

9 Canada is officially bilingual: two thirds of its citizens speak English, one fourth speak French, the rest speak other languages. Canada has a British style Parliamentary form of government. The current Prime Minister is Stephen Harper.

10 Canadian Facts Canadians pride themselves in their tolerance of other cultures and alternate lifestyles. The Canadian health care system is a single payer system financed by the government (taxes). All citizens are covered. The national sport is ice hockey.
