4. Why did soldiers write poetry? Poetry helped the soldiers deal with their feelings and emotions. The poems gave those at home a glimpse of the awful reality of life and death in the trenches. The reader is confronted with strong and vivid images of the human toll of war – mud, cold, fear. They describe the indescribable. The poetry told the story that the media and government didn’t tell.
