1 Arlies Primary school Phonics Workshop Mrs Bailey 2012

2 What is Phonics?  Phonics is the link between letters and the sounds they make  It teaches and supports children in reading and writing to learn for the rest of their lives

3 How do we teach phonics?  Letters and Sounds phase 1 and dough disco  Read write inc. sets 1 and write dance to set 3  Children are grouped according to the sounds they need to learn from Nursery to Year 6  Children receive 20 minutes focussed phonics each day  Spellings and homework  Guided reading

4 How does it work? The children:  learn to read and write 44 sounds and corresponding letters/letter groups using simple pictures (see your pack)  learn to read words with a partner using sound blending and read lively stories with a partner featuring words they have learned to sound out (Ditty books)  Learn to write words and sentences using correct letter formation

6 What are sounds  Although there are 26 letters in the English alphabet there are more than 40 sounds  Definitions of sounds Phoneme-The smallest unit of sound within a word e.g. a, s, t Grapheme-representing a sound/phoneme which can have more than one letter e.g. ai, igh

7 How can you help your child? By...  Saying the 44 English sounds in a pure way  Knowing the letters and groups of letters (graphemes) used to read and write the sounds  Understanding ‘Fred’ and how he helps with reading and spelling

9 Fred...  Fred helps children learn to read Fred can only talk in sounds... (Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat) We call this Fred Talk

10  If children understand Fred they can blend orally Blending is needed for reading fish f-i-sh Fred...

12 Fred...  Fred helps children learn to spell as well! Children convert words into sounds They hold up a finger to represent a sound We call this Fred Fingers

13 Sally Sentence Hands  Once children can confidently write CVC words e.g. pig, we use focus sounds to write sentences. finger space word

14 So how can you help your child?  By knowing the 44 pure sounds -not saying muh, tuh!  By knowing how to blend using Fred Talk for reading m_a_t  By knowing how to do Fred Fingers for spelling  By using Sally Sentence Hands to write sentences

15 And...  Attendance is vital  Practice the sounds  Homework  Spellings  Ask!

16 And...  By having a look at the parents’ pages on the web for tips and resources for supporting your child at home
