20 Capillaries Capillaries are the most numerous of the blood vessels and have the smallest diameter The exchange of materials between the blood and the cells of the body occur here The diameter of a typical capillary is 9 mm The endothelial cells of the capillary contain pores within the cells called fenestrations which allows for fluid (and small solute) exchange between the blood (plasma) and the tissues of the body (interstitial fluid) fenestrations act as a filter because they are TOO SMALL to allow RBCs, platelets and large plasma proteins (such as albumin) to leave the circulatory system
